“Gunk” engine cleaner

Don’t know if the above is still available but I remembering it smelling worse than a camel with a hangover. Is there a modern spray on hose off equivalent that will clean the engine of 18 years worth of oil without requiring steam cleaning off ?

Jizer is not as good as it was. But well enough in a degreaser tank.

i just use traffic film remover watered down a bit otherwise it softens paint and use it without gloves your skin peels off the day after pay 24 quid for 25 ltrs

Screwfix degreaser

"Someone" sprayed that all over the landrover engine. When they came to rinse it away it (may, allegedly, etc) have actually started to dissolve the white lines on the road too.

It's way cheaper than any of the other ones and works a dream.

Screwfix one hardly smells. Certainly not solvent style if it does. Maybe a little like a soap or somthing but nothing notable.

Straight TFR, spray on, agitate with a brush, leave for a few minutes then pressure wash off.

This is a 200k+ '07 Sprinter diesel cylinder head. Was filthy when it was dropped off. This is 2 rounds of TFR and no additional cleaning.

The outside's pretty clean too, all oil and gunk off. Even cleaned the ports pretty well.

Will that mix with Safety Clean fluid? I had the local Safety Clean guy squared away and could get a couple of gallons of liquid off him but he has moved on now. I have a little parts washer/degreaser and the Safety Clean stuff works well in it. I need to top it up or look at emptying it and starting from scratch.

Don't know? I doubt it would mix with water in a parts washer.

All this water based degreaser - goes white and stops working the minute you add water.

I never have water in the parts washer. Safety Kleen fluid is a high strength solvent, bit like traffic film remover mixed with paraffin.

The first is 'emulsifiable solvent degreaser'. Every little back street chemical company in the country produces this. Gunk and Jizer are brand-name examples of this class of chemical. This, as the name suggests, is solvent-based (hence aromatic) and is emulsifiable, so will wash off with (warm/hot) water. It leaves a slightly oily film on the part, which prevents rust. For really heavily soiled stuff, it is the best.

The second is traffic film remover. Again, every chemical company produces its own version. The Screwfix one is a brand example. These are detergents not solvents, so the cleaning action is different. They tend to be quite caustic, so bad for skin and paintwork. Again, rinse off with water. Parts washed in this way will flash rust. They will not deal well with really heavy grease.

Two washes, the first with a solvent degreaser, then followed by a detergent will leave almost anything sparking.

I had been thinking along the lines of this. Its 18 years worth of leaky landrover engine . Remembered I have a paraffin gun for the compressor and then remembered I havent replaced the compressor I sold with a smaller one that will fit in the garage so it’ll wait
