by the way......These guns have adjustable sights.....they have never been adjusted. So.....why do I shoot high and right with one and low and left with the other.....that makes me think I need to adjust the sights before I learn to shoot with either of them. Lots of time on the range won't help if the sights are off.

Initially, it does not matter where the shots are landing, you are looking for grouping of the shots, once they consistantly group in one area then you adjust the sights to bring the group into the centre of the target.

That really is a poor way to learn how to shoot, as you are adjusting the sights to factor out your poor shooting technique. It is far better to close the group up and the learn the reason as to why you are shooting where you are.

Otherwise every time you pick up a gun new to yourself your shots will be off.


A question for the OP are you using factory loads. If so try some hand loads with a lower charge this will stop some if not all of the recoil, helping you to fine tune your group

We have issues with the politicians trying to pass new laws here in the states. I can see where its all heading.......we will just have to hide the guns like they did in Iraq.

When I test fire the guns, the gun will not be touching the base. If nothing else, I'll be able to hold steady while I do the test. I sight in rifles all the time, so I know the concepts about how to get the gun shooting straight. I agree I need to learn technique......but I'm determined to start with a gun thats accurate.

Is it impossible to own guns in the U.K.????

No it's quite common for people to own all sorts of hand guns , it's also quite common that most are totally illegal and in the hands of crooks.

A few law abiding people can legally hold certain pistols or revolvers for the purpose of their work such as a huntmaster or a vet so that injured animals can be quickly put down .

Last time I looked there was only something like 68 legally held pistols or revolvers above .22 and not in a gun club licenced in the UK excluding Northern Ireland as there was still violent unrest just below the surface.( modified .22's are still being used in gunclub target shooting )

My answer wasn't about learning to shoot, it was about sighting in a gun new to someone as the sights will not be set for everyone when it leaves the factory, we all have different sight pictures depending on grip, eyeline, etc.

I'm reminded of the time my father went to collect a rifle from David Lloyd He was pulling the shots about an 1" to 11oclock, and asked David Lloyd to adjust the scope* He was told to learn to shoot, as the rifle was zeroed perfectly.


If I were to pull high left, and zero a gun to suit and you were to borrow said gun and you shoot high right, is the gun not zeroed or are you not shooting correctly, or is it me. The gun should be zeroed to where the gun shoots not the person behind it

I sight my guns in to compensate for my own bad habits and poor technique. It's mine, I'm the only one who needs to be able to hit anything with it. I've never done much shooting at a range (only in the military). I learned to handle firearms from farmers and hunters, not range masters, my "targets" usually bleed and eventually end up on the table. One hole groups are the norm because only one shot was fired. The heart/brain shot whitetail does not care whether I used proper breath control and a "regulation" shooting stance when I pulled the trigger.

This is just what works for me. I agree that, a rifle which has been professionally sighted in for a customer or range use should hit dead on with proper bench rest techniques. Chances are before I take it for a walk in the woods I will tweak it a bit to work better with my offhand shooting shortcomings.
