its not an external wall per say, its a wall constructed of brick or concrete which nowadays is usually only an external, most internal walls are stud partitions, if you do have internal brick walls then fixing your cabinets to them is fine, my cabinets were

Yes in practice people have cabinets in houses without any brick at all. An old now departed keeper had his in his log home

A donut in the gunclub who lives near me was inspected a year or two back, the policeman , who is as nice and fair a person as you could meet asked him to show where he had his safe. I have a modern house, we got it built. During the build i got the builder to put in extra dwangs to allow me to fix my cabinets securely. Other option was put them in the loft but I couldn't see me going up there at 2.30 in the morning to get my rifle out!

Lofts are a terrible choice
Rust from condensation. Changing temperatures creating issues with wood to metal fit etc etc

Mines been fine the past 25 years or so.

Lots of problems. With heating and a warm board roof you can get away with it but many times more you will rust a good barrel out or ruin a good stock
Attics get very hot on a warm day and cool rapidly and are notoriously bad for condensation ( check out the building regs requirements for ventilation. Post 70 s)

I guess it wouldn't be to bad a place for SS synthetic rifles but wooden stocked ones with blued barrels might not fair to well. My biggest problem would be climbing the ladder every time I wanted a gun, the family would get fed up pretty quick too with me stomping about at all hours

i have big industrial dessicant bags in my cabinet, nicked them from where i used to work from when we had steel castings brought in...they work well...i also know of people with those dehumidifier tubs in theirs too.

i agree unless you have fixed stairs into your loft space then its not an easy thing to get in and out of whilst holding a gun...it'd be a faff with my .243 and photon NV scope and IR illuminators on

parm you should find a perfectly good shotty for £100 or less .

My neighbour had the same deal as I removed the cabinet from the roof joists. Only 30mm wood screws used !!

I have an old side by side made by Hinton in Taunton, It must be well over a hundred years old, i knock a lot of clays with it, and its great fun upstaging the guy with the 5 grand perazzi, beretta or blaser, by a fair margin. Some of them get pretty sore about it . So don't fall into the trap of thinking the more you spend the better you will be.

My dad had a Hinton, nice scroll engraving and beautifully balanced, but the ejectors kept giving trouble. I remember a gunsmith taking it apart and showing us an odd-shaped component that had been previously been repaired by brazing, but had failed again. I cannot recall any details (it was nearly 60 years ago, and I was only about 12 at the time), but they were certainly not normal Southgate ejectors, and might have been the Needham design. In the end dad sold the Hinton and bought a 1920s Gallyon BLNE that I still use occasionally.

I have had the stock off mine as i wanted to send it off for rechequering. Inside its all standard, unremarkable Anson and Deeley boxlock. It has been well engraved though, and has a nice bit of wood in the stock. I believe Hinton was better known for his fishing tackle.

It's a myth that ss as used for barrels won't rust. It certainly will especially in the chamber and throat
People often think all stainless won't corrode at all - it certainly will in rifle barrel grades and the contamination it comes into contact with
Trick is even in my gunroom I leave a little oil in most of my rifles after cleaning, take it out with meths before use. Learnt that the hardway with a Tika 595 stainless

Not had one rust yet and I live and work in soggy Argyll! The synthetic stock won't be affected by changes in temp like a wooden one will.

It adds to the fun if the “up and over” brigade have wasted five minutes at each stand debating which choke tubes to use, fiddled endlessly with their barrel selectors, and spouted forth about the how one brand of cartridge is vastly superior because it is claimed to be 5ft/s faster. Nowadays I just fire cheap squibs through an old AYA (3/8 choke in both barrels) for everything. I miss plenty, but no more than I did with the O/U that now sits unused in the cupboard.
