gun blue touch up pens

anyone used these? are they any good?

have a new to me rifle and the rear iron sight is stopping me putting the scope where i need it, so plan on cutting the sight off and filing the area flush, but will be left with shiny metal.

dont wanna take the stock off and blue it all so thought maybe a touch up pen would be good enough but never used them, always just used a bottle of perma blue and done the whole thing before now

I used the birch wood casey one and it was pants, not sure on the others but I wouldn't touch theirs with a 10 foot barge pole

Can't you remove the sight without cutting it off?, it must have been fitted as a separate item during manufacture. You will also devalue the gun should you wish to sell it in the future.

Might be worth asking a local gunshop what pens they recommend, for me I always reblue everything as then it's uniform throughout

You could try getting it cerakoted afterwards seen the a few jobs done with it turned out real nice

rear open sights have have to come off to fit the scope on your not altering the bore or shortening the barrel so no probs

I only ask with my work head on as I know nothing about fire arms

Nah no chance of damaging or making unsafe

It doesn't look to be remove able, no screws holding it in and I've given it a few taps either way with an Ali drift and it's not budging.

The gun only cost me 50 quid and is a sole lamping gun so bein able to put a photon scope on it is more important than getting my money back for it

well, common sense prevailed...rang the guy i bought it off to see if he knew how to get it out...he said he had trid and failed numerous times so just bought higher mounts, but thats not an option for me so i had a nother go with a brass drift, still no joy so i bit the bullet (so to speak) and took it over to my local gunsmith. took him 40 mins but its off now.

looks like its not the original, and it hasnt been made well enough so it was pressed in rather than being the right size to just be tapped in.

its in the drawer of useless gun bits now never to see the light of day again until i get bored of a bolt action and buy another semi auto

Never used a pen thing but I did a complete barrel with cold blue. The secret is making sure it is as clean as clean can be. It was on a 22-250 that I used daily so got a lot of abuse. The only place the cold blue came off was where the gun rack rubbed on it. I would guess your rear sight was "sweated"into position. On a gun you only paid fifty pounds for I would take the file to it. Not many of us use open sights nowadays so it won't matter that it hasn't got them or not

ive done a few full barrels/actions. did my air rifle, my first s/s and o/u shotguns, mu fathers s/s and a mates .223 and .260.

never needed to use the pens though as the only gun i have scratched and actually been annoyed about was black chrome anyway
