I have a lot of large stuff like bonnets, tailgates, doors etc and I havent got a hope in hell of being able to wrap them well enough to withstand any courier service...

Going out to work at 6am and not getting home before 6pm is another although parcel shops have helped a lot with that. Normal reasons for me not wanting to post an item is 1) because it's one often associated with scammer (mobile phones etc) 2) It's fragile enough to stand a high risk of damage in transit or 3) I want the buyer to be 100% aware of what they were getting.
Pot kettle black?Marketplace and gumtree are very useful. I always haggle before arrival, so I don't waste a journey or the sellers time.
I tend not to sell on either platform though as I can't stand dealing with the clunge !
If it's not on here its homeworkshop or back under the bench..until the next time i need to make some space ! for another purchase
I thought that I would give facebook a try for some items that I had to sell. Joined a couple of groups specific to the type of equipment that I had for sale. Had two replies. first one asked me to keep the item for a couple of days and then never turned-up and the second just sent stupid offers and got abusive when I ignored them.
Much easier to put it all in a skip as no dealing with f**kwits involved. Terrible shame as I like to think of surplus gear being used. Never tried gumtree but sounds like the same bunch frequent that as well.

I bought a car seat and it turned up in a courier van rapped in plastic , guy had got the postage for about £20 I think. I had even suggested I could pick it up if he had messed up the delivery price. I was shocked.
Is a lot of hassle though if you only do a little selling on the ebay.

There's obviously exceptions, your average vehicle panels are available the length of the country anyway.
Things can be sent on pallets or via fragile goods services....wether it's worth it or not is really up to you and the buyer, but it's hardly impossible to achieve.

Well I'm the opposite.
Saw a ride on mower for sale locally, 150 €.
Said either dead battery or dead starter motor.
I turned up and jump started it thinking I'd like to knock her down on the price, a bit.
It started straight up, did everything it should, I just handed her the money and said thank you very much.
The oil in it was clean ! And it was well maintained by her neighbour.
I'm crap at haggling anyway.

If you are able to have things delivered then by and large should also able to have things collected?
If a buyer is willing to take risk of damage in transit or buying sight unseen (as I often am) then why not?
I'll send (or allow them to arrange collection) for pretty much anything as long as I have it in writing that they accept responsibility and pay by bank transfer before I send.
I'm curious as to how people's attitudes towards this change depending on their location in the country, supply and demand really.

Quite simply if I want something and I have to put myself out to get it delivered then it's worth my while. I'm ot going to put myself out for someone else's benefit unless it suits me to. If they want it and I have put collection only, they can make the extra effort just as I have driven several hours/hundres of miles for something I really want. If someone offers to courier to me an empty box (as I have done) then I'll usually agree to have it collected again by their courier.
For people who do however, they usually end up better off from the deal than they expected. I've been known to hand back cash to people to cover their petrol and as several members here can attest to, if you come to me to collect a tool or machine you'll often leave with several goodies not even mentioned.

Great, but we don't all live a couple hours from one another. If I were to collect from you in person I'd be out two days and probably 3 times that of a pallet. I can't imagine the many members I've sold to on here feel hard done by because I posted it to them for the previously agreed price.
I'm happy to pay for extra effort etc or to cover time, but simply refusing to sell something to someone because they can't be bothered putting it in a modicum of effort on a sale...is a bit rubbish in my opinion, particularly if a buyer is willing to cover most of the inconvenience.
Different folks, I don't see selling items as an inconvenience, it's me providing a service, if I feel I would be inconvenienced by a sale then I would request financial recompense, up to them if they want to continue or not.

For members here, I'd go the extra mile of course. We're talking about Gumtree though where you're just as likely to be let down by someone within walking distance.

Offer him £40.Unbelievable! Sane guy who bought my table saw and left unhappy at £50 has it up on Gumtree for £100
Good luck to him but shows you that some of these guys who come looking stuff for nothing may be flippers
