Gumtree "buyers"

I buy alot of items on Gumtree. Tools specifically some great deals are out there. When I see something reasonably priced I ask to go see it with full amount in my pocket.

If reasonable I don't ask for discount just pay the man. Sometimes I do ask for discount but I have the courtesy to do so face to face and we agree a fair deal.

Indeed I have paid EXTRA for items voluntarily. Such as an older gentleman who kept a stove for me for a week with no deposit based only on my word I was going to buy it. I gave him £10 extra which he sent a nice message later that day



Then I try to SELL stuff

Constant messages of will you take x for it mate which is usually less than half the already fair asking price.

I had an arc welder up on Gumtree for £50 no offers including 2.5kg box of rods. Constant messages asking nothing about it but "will you take £20?" Then no response when I say its worth £50 to me.

Am I unreasonable to get fed up with this? How do other members find selling stuff on free add sites?

I deleted the add and will keep the little arc welder on the shelf. Don't need it often but it's handy to have a small arc welder that runs off a 13amp plug around. At £50 it was a bargain from myself

Know the feeling, i gave up trying to sell stuff some time ago, now i give it to friends or it goes to landfill

I haven’t used gumtree for years. Last item we sold was a kids mountain bike. Wasn’t open to offers but they still try. The one I remember was” they aren’t the tyres I want will you take x amount? “ Haven’t used it since. EBay occasionally and I just ignore the idiots

No matter how many times you say no offers you will always have an idiot , if they no what they are looking for they know what it's worth . I think half the time they just want to see if your mug and then they'll relist for more . Seem many a thing cheap the a few days later listed for much more , I just don't take it as an insult and just don't reply to offers , Havn't put anything on gumtree for years.

All online market places in general, wasted too much time on gumtree messaging sellers that ignore me. Picked up a peice of 8mm plate yesterday, the ad is still up.

I just ignore the morons. And the ones who try to haggle when they get here are sent off disappointed. That costs them fuel etc. very satisfying.

All depends how you ask and talk to people ,well sometimes, I have offered to pay for courier and organise if they would be good enough to parcel for me if I pay listed price , virtually everyone has said yes , and I have been pleased with my purchase , as for the odd sale ,yes do get asked for mega discounts but just say thanks but no , and the actual buyers that collect have been a pleasure to deal with.

You would think so but sadly there is no common sense.

I sold a 10 inch table saw a few days ago on Gumtree. These were the messages-



Advertised for £75

First message how about £50? I said £60 was best price.

He turned up on that basis and was visibly upset when I said we left it at £60. He said "no- My offer was 50 that's it".

He then asked was 50 really the best on it(?)

Seriously.

I just said give me £50 and let's get this over with.

He left unhappy with his £50 10 inch table saw. I wish him well with it but people think they haggle by text. Then haggle a SECOND time and if you don't oblige you are not a nice guy aparantly.

What I have learned is I make this WAY too easy when I'm buying stuff from other people. I just turn up cash in hand and pay

If something is already reasonably priced don't make a knob of yourself over a tenner just pay up.

These were the first couple of items I have listed on Gumtree for a long time. It was a reminder on what some people can be like.

Having said that I've also sold stuff on it before no problems. So I can't paint all Gumtree buyers with one big brush!

As some said here maybe best just ignore these messers outright so I'll try that going forward. Gumtree has a star rating system now though so will probably get 1 star reviews as a result of not responding Not sure how that works actually I've never been able to leave feedback for items I bought through gumtree.
