Guillotine Jamed

I have a 2 meter Edwards truecut 3.25 and yesterday it jammed!. A small piece of metal (25 x 200mm x 2mm stainless steel) seems to have jumped up and sat on the edge of the blade so that when the blades converged it has flipped into the vertical position 90 degrees from how it's supposed to be and locked the blades up. The safety clutch on the machine screamed and I switched it off but now the whole thing is jammed solid. Does anyone know if there is a reverse switch or lever on this machine or is there some other way to unjam it.

lol. there should be a pair of adjusters on either the blade or the bed

That would be my first look, open the gap up if possible.

failing that you will have to take the blade off. most are just bolted on, just make sure you get the correct angle when you put it back on. 5 degrees i think

Thanks v much for the advice.

At either end of the heavy mount for the top blade there are large (about 40mm) hexagons but these face down so they look as if they are for lifting and raising something. Are these the adjusters.

I got the Gilly set for 1.5mm stainless and only cut from 1mm to 2mm so have not adjusted it and it has worked really well with just a bot of blade oiling.

Any ideas where the adjusters might be and what they look like?

Probably a lever, one at each end of it if it has them...

the nuts will be for the angle adjustment. have a look round these. did you cut the sheet in the middle of the blade?

mmm don't recall any levers, but i can be quite blind!

Would the levers be under the cover plates?

Sorry for all the questions but to adjust the blade clearance do you just use feeler gauges?

As its a small machine, it might not have any, or maybe one at one end. Probably not under coverplates though.
Try firing it up when its cold, might have enough guts to lift the blade again....

Sorry, missed the ' did i cut the sheet in the middle of the blade' question.

I was cutting 30mm strips off of 4 pieces that were about 250mm long and the jam occured near the middle of the blade.

I assumed the screech I heard followed by the brake lining smell was a safety clutch

I did switch the gilly on again after it jammed but normally the only time it does anything is when you press the cut pedal. I didnt press the cut pedal as it jammed on the cut stroke and i figured it would just try to cut again and maybe do more damage.

ring the company up that makes them and tell them what youve done. they will point out where the levers are etc

Ohhh missed this one, but if you didn't sort it, and its similar construction to mine, remove the front cover plate and wind the flywheel back wards, theres a square on the flywheal you can put a socket on.....

you might want to check the brakes holding it upright correctly once you've recycled the machine.......

The blades on them are usually adjusted on shims, you shouldn't need to worry tho, with a decent bar the machine will crank back by hand...

Thanks for the advice people! In the end I spoke to Edwards and they said reverse the motor. I swapped two of the phases, switched it on hit the chop pedal and out popped the jammed piece. I swapped back the phases and all works fine. In future I will check that small cut pieces have fallen out of the back and not jumped onto a blade!

Exactly the same problem has happened to me small 2mm strip of stainless jammed at 90 degrees between blades. Reversed the motor and blade goes up and blockage drops out. So glad I found this post well sorted geoffno6 !
