guide price for steel

Hello,

I've just started welding and looking to get a supply of steel in, box section, round, flat bar etc. I've been looking at the metalstore, metals4u etc but the cheapest of all appears to be F.H Brundle and have depot's in Scotland. Are they popular and get good reviews?

Hi Dave welcome to the forum , I use Brundles for gate parts , they are reasonable on price but you may find bar stock and box section cheaper elsewhere , cant comment on anyone in your area , someone here may know of steel stockist near you .

I use FH brundle, find them to be reasonable priced and it's a hassle free experience for me. The local steel stockists prices near me are a lot dearer and they have no interest in the little man.

I use dc iron over brundles as they're cheaper and hold most the same stock. Very easy to deal with

Firstly steel is currently too expensive to just buy for stock buy what you need when you need it (trust me stock will soon build up all on its own).
For practice bits hunt scrap. For small projects speak to local fabricators and for big jobs shop around. Yeah, brundles are OK but commercialy they cannot play against my regular suppliers on std stock. To get anything like an acceptable price I have to speak only to the manager of my local depot.

There has been an increase of late with scrapyards realising there is a market for offcuts and other sections of steel that still have a use.

Their prices tend to be a lot lower than steel stockists but stock is what they have and that's it, ideal for the hobby guy just wanting a few variable lengths of stuff.

Of course there are still many scrap yards that have no interest for selling to the public and stepping foot onto the premises results in several rabid rottweilers chewing you to bits, I always send the wife in first..the dogs will just have to take their chance.

I can't say I've noticed any increase in price of steel recently, in fact I've just looked and I just paid 2 quid more for a 7.5m length of 40mm box than I did a few years back. I can't say I envy hobby guys buying small amounts or offcuts but if anyone is near to Kendal and wants a rummage through my offcuts you're more than welcome!

I dont keep a lot of stock but as Kent says stock soon builds up , you will find the more you buy the cheaper it is from steel stockists , today Brundles were £0.50 per length cheaper than my regular Stockist on 16mm Round Bar
so 20 lenghts saves £10.00 , it is worth ringing round !

That's likely because you were not getting the best of deals earlier because it's certainly gone up a fair bit
