grub screws

hi dispite my best effords . i am pretry sure my aquired power pack engine is dead .

so i have a replacement engine for it . i have been soaking the grub screws in wd40.

if this fails. gentle heat ? and pullers. these are the two dear bits. would a small gas type plumbing heat gun be enough?.

i have oxy with a torch but dont really want to get new wee bottle

Oxy kit would be my choice, because you will give more heat in less time so it will not have too much time to propagate to other components that might be damaged by heat

Try a proper penetrating oil. Wd40 has never helped for me. This stuff is good value and seems to work well.

Angle drill…..
Id heat that up with oxy as quick as possible and see if it will pull off. After trying a torx bit hammered into the grub screw. Or even the right sized aln bit first. Much easier to tab a bit in rather than an aln key.

Difficult to tell from the pic, but is that def a hex grub screw? I'd reckon it needs cleaned out [looks to be full of dust/grit] and a puller on it.

Unless a manual/parts list is confirming this, it might be on a taper? Happy to be wrong, though.....

If they are on the dead engine, cut the engine off to get clearance to work on them properly.

The "gear" looks to be one half of a flexible coupling - you might find the cost of a replacement is rather less then the time and effort required to get that one off.

Looks like the UCC coupling drive is welded to the cooling fan, grub screws or not a decent puller will get that off the shaft.

Standard WD40 is not a penetrating fluid.
They now do sell a proper penetrating one though I've no idea how good it is.

I didn’t know that.
A 50/50 mix of acetone and power steering fluid was one I was told years ago to be great as a penetration fluid, only problem is it needs to be in a container which you can squeeze it out as opposed to pump it out as the acetone destroys the seals over time.

Why not?
Surely it is mainly down to viscosity and WD40 is pretty thin.

Having said that watching these tests none of them really made much of a difference - heat was the best!

i have bought some decent pen. oil. there is definatly 4 allen head grub screws.

would it pull if i cant get the screws out?

i dont think i would be able to cut shaft off engine

I use the ATF mix in a cleaned coffee jar. Application is done with an artist's paintbrush, right where it is wanted.

any idea how to get this off? the back bit . i think its just the disc in the middle thsts holding it

all 4 grub screws out. keyway out and gear pulled off .

could get any access at all. basically managed to part engine enough and cut shaft with grinder. .

now soaking it to remove shaft

its alteast out and not damaged
