Grr modern paints

My local paint shop finally refused to sell me celly paint (even though they still stock it for some reason?). Try this modern stuff, Lechler Tecnogrip, it'll be fine they said. I painted my buggy with it. The finish isn't as good and its harder to apply. But here's the annoying bit. A month after curing, a bit of petrol spills on the chassis and off comes the paint. Great, thanks. Its got no chemical resistance. Avoid.

AJL, I used Celly on the quarter panel that has the petrol cap on my Isuzu and it's survived years of petrol drips.

Celly would probably have softened if it got petrol on it but if you dont rub it & let the petrol evaporate the paint will harden again.

Find your nearest paint supplier with an HMG account and get them to order in nisocoat 2. Take your pick of BS RAL and automotive colours in direct gloss with various sheens or clear coat. Spray that over an epoxy primer and you have the ultimate DIY durable paint job. Petrol won't touch it, weathering won't touch it. Proper 2k durability.

^^^^ Sounds good, I just looked Nisocoat2 up & its a 2 pack non isocyanate Acrylic. Also tried looking up the data sheets but have to create an account & log in to do so. It does make me wonder what the hell do you put in these modern paints to replace isocyanate & what are their long term implications?
I look at a modern tin of paint & the list of ingredients sound like something out of the Haynes Enterprise Starship manual!

I'll try the Nisocoat. Can I ask, @charlysays is it better than celly? I mean celly is so forgiving when applied by amateurs, is cheap as chips, and the finish is that nice smooth deep matt. I do like celly!

You can get MSDS from rawlins paints etc without creating an account
It uses a type of epoxide polyamide hardener, so similar technology to epoxy paints. It is acrylic though as you say so it's an epoxy acrylic hybrid really. Its been around for at least 10 years and a full face ABEK2P3 respirator and coveralls is more than adequate for spraying it.

I think you can get the paint in 1l tins from a paint supplier with an HMG account but the hardener only comes in 1l. So effectively the minimum amount is 3l.
The cured paint film is basically the same as iso cured 2k acrylic so it is a lot more durable, weather resistant and chemical resistant than celly or any other 1k paint. It also takes a lot longer to fully cure than iso paints, much like epoxy paints. Don't ask me how it has such good weather resistance with an epoxy hardener! My car has been outside 24/7 for going on 3 years and there's no fading or weathering affects noticeable. Can't comment on the application vs celly as I've never sprayed celly but have owned cars with celly paint. The direct gloss nisocoat is prone to orange peel so you tend to have to hose on wet coats to get a good gun finish. I will say it's extremely glossy. The clear coat is easier to spray in terms of orange peel according to my mate who sprayed his car with nisocoat clear over the top of a solvent basecoat from Jawel paints.
Nisocoat will never take off or be mandated in body shops because the application doesn't lend itself well to painting cars in one hit but for the DIYer it's about as good as it gets.
