Groove/bearing nut sockets

Got a couple of these to remove on my saw gearbox they look like this for anyone unfamiliar with them I was!

There’s a couple of different sizes on it one is in a recess. I’ve tried to drift them round but that’s not working I’ll need to torque up properly on reassembly anyway.

So I’m looking at a proper set I guess I’m unlikely to use them again but always handy to keep. Seen these so far

The pin inside style looks more robust anyone seen anyothers that could be better?

I guess my other option is to cut about an old socket

If access permits, a simple C spanner should suffice.

Casteleated socket is what you are looking for but a c spanner would also do the job if its accessible.

Well that is true. The blighters slip off, shear the lug off or damage the locknut

Its not hard to fashion a normal socket into a castellated one with a thin disc, I made this one to tighten a relief valve deep in a hydraulic valve chest.

You can make one easily enough from an old socket or even a bit of tube.

Another way I have seen it done,
If you have an accessible one the same size and one in a recess,
Take off the accessible one, install it against the one in the recess, slide 2 bits of key steel (or scraps/screws/etc) into the grooves on both to tie them togeather then spin the outer one and hope the inner follows.

If its for a one off job I normally tack four bits of key steel on a socket

I made one like that to get my Husqvarna chainsaw clutch off. I used a big plumbers pipe wrench to get the one off my pushbike bottom bracket.

Skf make the sockets for those, good quality. Others options are c spanner or hammer and punch! All work.

I also chopped a socket up for this duty - not my finest work, but a successful job all the same. I needed an imperial size, which were thin on the ground when I looked.

The one shown in the OP looks like a KM-series locknut. The BGS set specifically says it is for KM-series locknuts. The Nielsen set doesn't actually say much about what it fits, so I'd recommend making sure they actually fit whatever you need them to fit.

The SKF sockets mentioned above are superb

Thanks everyone think you’ve saved me a few quid! There was one on top that I’ve been eager to remove so I can work out which bearing is causing the gearbox to lock up solid!

Managed to chisel it around had to work it clockwise and anti-clockwise as it had threadlock on it. Finally drifted free! Leaving the shaft and gear to tap out.

There’s a few others I’ll likely need a socket for so will cut an old socket up

They are indeed a km series nut so luckily they are available quite cheaply from bearing suppliers.

I’ll have to get some pics of it all.
