Grit blasting a defender bulkhead

repairing a defender bulkhead and looking to get it grit (or whatever) blasted

Anyone had this done that can give me an idea of what is a reasonable cost for this?

I am assuming it is best to blast before repairing rather than after when you just have to start all over again

Any suggestions as to places in Bedfordshire or Hertfordshire that you know are good for this sort of work

Don't know your area, but if you have it stripped and ready and take it to a full time blasters it shouldn't take more than an hour so maybe 40-60 quid at a guess. It will rust up quickly after blasting so a quick coat of weld compatible primer will save the need for a re-blast when you finish the welding.

Try phoning Bedford Blasting Services near the A421 Kempston junction if that is close by. They seem reasonably priced and are able to blast car bits without warping them. I could only guess at a price - don't know if they charge by fiddly or by area, but a car wheel is £15. Before welding makes sense. If it is kept inside in the summer it will last a fair time before rusting.

I wouldn't use a weld through primer though. Epoxy primer is waterproof and can be removed locally with a flap disc where welding.

Are the fumes from a weldable primer less toxic than other primers? Agreed, grinding back is a good idea for sure.

You will find a lot of weld through primers will react with filler and other primer/paint i would epoxy as said above
