Grinder woes

Well, they’ve lasted 5 years, and I bought them as “Spares or Repair” in an auction for the opening bid of £10 for all 5. I’ve done nothing to them, other than check the wiring so can’t complain too much I suppose.

I don’t really remember why I retired the first one, but it has similar marks as the one it looks like I’m about to chop the plug off.

Symptoms are intermittent loss of power, what sounds like arcing contacts and it takes a second or 5 to get up to speed.

last pic try cleaning those bush contacts copper area and new bushes as there cheap enough to buy

If you're talking about the 'gouges' in the laminations, they look like they're the cuts put in to balance the rotor during production. As @gaz1 says, I'd look more to the commutator/brushes.

Spin them and hold some 120 wet and dry on to smooth them and clean the slots out with a broken hacksaw blade then try a set of new brushes, nothing to lose at £2 a grinder.

IT looks to me that the armature has been touching the field coils, I'm not looking at the grooves, but at the polished marks on the fan end. At a guess the bearings are knacked, I had that on an ancient Black & Decker drill, to be fair, it was worked to death & it was free anyway.

We have a winner.

Investigated one a little further, because I could and I had 5 minutes before tea.

I give you, magic bearings..

Now, to find some replacements..

That could have some "bearing" on the problem. I do wonder if new bearings will cost as much as a cheap grinder though.

Bearings are 'generally' cheap enough.

£3.43 a bearing. Bought 2 for the time being, as an experiment to see if it cures the issue.

Bearings cost more than the bloody grinders though!?! What’s the world coming to?

Should be here Tues/Weds, so hopefully by the weekend I’ll have a verdict on whether I can fix things haha
