Grinder wattage

OK guys n gals
Just speaking to my tool rep about some more angle grinders. He says the higher the wattage the slower the discs wear out as regards stones and slitting discs.
Now I currently run 600watt for sanding mainly coz they are slimmer and lighter and 1000 watt for stones and cutting..

Looking at up to 1700 Watts on the matabo range and wondering I know they will be capable of faster working but disc use being extended ?

i think the rep might be taking the mickey im sure using a cutting disk fast will heat the disk up fasterr and hence wear faster same as drilling there is an good speed to run at any higher melts the bits

cobblers wattage has nothing to do with speed just the torque power of machine. Its the rpm suits the disk size on a particular machine. smaller grinders run a fast speed larger grinders run a slower speed

the only way I can see it making a difference is if the disk wear rate changes when you slow the disk down by pressing too hard

a higher power grinder would take more pressure before it slowed

And wear the disc quicker too!

I think speed does change wear rate. Too slow a speed increases wear. Someone told me that and I noticed it when I was running my die grinder too slow.

the idea is keep the surface speed up without pushing the disk in. lightstrokes back and forth not just dive in . that wears the disk out faster cuts slower and overloads the grinder

But this is compensation for the lack of grunt.? Grunt saves me time and time is money on priced work

Not when connected to a crummy regulator. Mine only started working properly when I fitted a decent regulator that could let enough CFM through. Then the die grinder started grinding four times faster and wore out heads three times slower.

I think that's the extreme end proof that the guy could well be correct

Every cutting tool no matter what it is will have an optimal designed cutting speed for each material. Hence why you get different discs for different materials. More watts from a grinder just stops you stalling it easily, like you can with the battery ones.

I think the sales rep needs a job with Disney more wattage means you can apply more pressure to the disc when cutting which does wear the disc faster you are supposed to let the disc cut, not put excess pressure on it

A free running grinder at x amount of rpm isn’t going to be doing the same amount of rpm once you make contact with the job. Your going to slow it down but how much depends on the motor torque. More wattage , more torque, reduced bogging down. You don’t need to start digging it in thinking it’s gonna speed the job up and reduce time because it won’t.
The best time saver is selecting the right wheel on the right tool and let both the tool and the wheel do the work.

So Watts = available torque , disc speed maintained means more metal removal. So is it then a case of more metal removed higher life of whatever wheel you have on ? Within the maximum speed allowance on the disc in question?
Its looking like a general opinion of yes the rep is correct as regards stones and slitting discs. Yes?

u said the higher the wattage the slower the disk wears out . no if u have a lower wattage grinder u will have to take lighter cuts in order to keep the surface speed up .a higher wattage one will not slow down when u put a bit more pressure on it and surface speed stops the same without reduction . that's what wears your stone quicker and grinder has to work harder

From experience of different grinders and observations. When cutting or grinding unless a grinder is massif under powered to start with, the disk will remove material at its optimum rate pretty much regardless of available power. When you need the power is with a fibre backed disk something like 24 Grit then all the wattage available helps as they put far more demand on a grinder than a stone disk.
