I have been using my 41/2" grinder today. it has started to run slow. It's an old green and orange black and Decker.
is the motor burning out or maybe a strip down and clean?any ideas
Check the brushes, they could be worn

I would strip and inspect it prior to ordering bits, slowing down could also be a dry angle drive, bearings or bushes .

spin the blade by hand if it sounds horrible and clicky the armatures had it. same if it sparks

Is it making popping noises or any bright flashes from the armature ? It's worth trying a set of brushes but they don't always cure it. Mine had damaged the segments and it was still running but sounded scary. A new armature is £60 for it so I got a new grinder for £15 more.

I had a similar problem with an elderly Bosch jigsaw, the cutting speed reduced and it became erratic in operation. Turned out to be failure of the suppression capacitor, the only place I could get an original one was from Germany at about £12; eBay came up trumps for about £1.70, wasn't identical (same spec) but it worked fine and continues to.

Cut the suppressor out, the worst thing that happens is you will wipe out the radio
nw grinder time we get it all the time at work when they start to play up if its anything other than the flex its bin time , we did go through a time of getting brushes for them, but its such a pita getting the boss to order brushes its easyer to add grinders to supplyes order and get moaned at. put brushes in them they go for a bit but they never go for that long 2nd time around
How naive am I? Had to google that one. Wish I hadn’t.

I have a Stayer grinder that has had a couple of sets of new brushes although it doesn't get used much nowadays. If you clean between the segments the brushes last better
It’s the most common breakdown with any of mine,after cable breaks anyway,just try brushes first,I have some from the ‘90’s where I’ve replaced at least 2 sets of brushes,they still outlive the newer ones ,that’s why I’m happy to spend a few quid and 20 minutes.

I remember the time i told someone not to run a 110 on 240,but he said it'll be ok because the extra voltage will make it more powerful,but he knew best,hour later i didnt answer his call as i knew what he was about to ask,"can i borrow your...........",on your bike mateYou're not trying to run a 220v grinder on 110v are you?
