Retired engineer, now only a DIY welder, based Scottish Borders.
Rescued a big DC set from a scrap heap in Nigeria and did a lot of work with it back in 1972-73. The original Ruston & Hornsby engine was wrecked but I rigged up a drive from an old 2-cyl Lister. (Open decompressor valves, swing the handle a few times and then shut the valves quickly to get it started. There must still be a few people alive who remember such things.)
Bought a little Cebora 140A transformer in 1974, used for both work and DIY. Still have it today, good as new, but too many amps and too few volts for anything under 2mm thick.
For car repairs, have BOC Portapack (bought 1980, but stopped using it when cylinder rental got too dear) and SIP Migmate 100 (c.1990, works OK, but nothing like so easy to use as big professional MIG sets).
Planning to buy an MMA inverter sometime soon.
Excellent forum, this. Newsagents sell What Car, What Video, What Camera, What Laptop, etc, but there are few places to get info on welding. (But I ignored this forum until recently because the title was MIG- and my interest was MMA).
