Greetings from a Brummie living in the North West

Hello good folks,

After reading through countless threads over the years, decided it was time to join the forum to get involved properly, and more specifically needing some advice as I am looking to take up welding as a bit of a hobby. Started doing occasional bit of MIG some 20 years ago with an old Sealey 150, but fancy trying TIG AC/DC.

So I’m here to get advice, swap ideas, have a laugh where possible, and hopefully contribute something useful along the way. As with most established forums, appreciate the depth of knowledge and help, looking forward to being part of it.

My background is low power electronics, though currently working in power electronics. Always found the hands on engineering stuff like welding, fabrication more rewarding though.

This sounds interesting.....
For me, low power was OC72s and AF117s in hobby electronics, then Texas Instruments 74 Series TTL in minicomputers. Now high power is stud-mounted diodes and 50 Amp MOSFETs in welders, and 200 Amp IGBTs in EVs. I guess your technology is more up-to-date?

Hi, and thanks for the welcome

I had to look up the OC72. :-) I started out learning/studying electronics in the mid 80’s, also learning assembly language/BASIC. Then after some years took an interest in PIC microcontrollers (assembly only) as I enjoyed embedded electronics. But it really hurt my head. I lost interest in computers shortly after Windows came along, but other interests also partially responsible too.
Work wise,,I’ve done cheap consumer through to military medical aerospace, with a small amount of analog/digital/pcb design work working at some very small but also some large companies.
If I’m truly honest, I am now very rusty when it comes to electronics so just ticking over for a few more years, in a role that shouldn’t tax my brain too much but often does. The products I work with are for battery testing rectifiers/ h-bridge kind of thing commonly using SCRs, FETs, and IGBTs, with the latest gen using silicon carbide technology. So in some ways more up to date and some ways not.

Anyway, I’m waffling, but the legacy products in many ways not too different to welders.
