You can't fill the proper jerry cans up with petrol at any garage round here though, I suppose diesel would be alright.

I never had a problem in my neck of the woods, either:

They are approved fuel containers, if the garage challenges you.

They aren't marked as such though. They might have relented now as I have only used a 5 ltr plastic one for the last couple of years.

I've never been challenged when filling my metal jerry cans, they might not have "approved marks" but they are sound and have far better seals than the plastic-fantastic cans garages sell, I've never had a metal can leak, wish I could say the same for the plastic ones.

Do garages enforce the maximum volume on a can ? My metal cans are 5 gallon which is rather more than the sign at the garage says is allowed but to be honest a can with only 5 litres in probably wouldn't get me to the garage to fill up anyway.

You can get 5 gallons in them and still have some air space, I know I have to buy it by the litre nowadays but I still think in imperial units, it's just so much easier.

If you think about it litres is the odd one out since we measure distance travelled in Miles, speed in Mph and fuel economy in Mpg.

If I'm going somewhere I think... okay so it's 50 miles away so it'll take me about an hour and because my car does 50+mpg I need a couple of gallons of fuel for the round trip.

Don't get me started on litres per 100 Km.... that truly is the Spawn of Satan.

Varies, and I'm sure that's either down to people not knowing the rules, inventing the rules or not caring.
I've once been stopped from filling metal 25l oil drums with diesel at one place, but the plastic ones were fine...
There are rules on petrol containers. But at work the petrol drum is an old translucent oil/spray chemical type drum (which just melt in a fire, had it happen...) and aren't necessarily well sealed. Certainly not a correct drum and also I believe at least twice the quantity that should go in a plastic container anyway. Seems to always get away with it though.

Not sure if it's 5l or 10l plastic and about double for metal. And I think only so much that's allowed to be stored at home. A google search will tell, or Mr. Vark will almost certainly know.

Guy I worked with at Longbridge had a couple of 45 gallon (205 litre) drums full of petrol on his garage probably come by illegally as he was well known for turning up Monday mornings with a sports bag full of stuff for sale.
