Argon I would say.........more bluey green.

hmm, thanks rod a couple of useful sites for my favourites. must have been pure argon in the new green bottle. but for some reason i have a thought the bottle was bright green (inert gas) but I'm probably wrong, was only welding for about 5 minutes. cheers

Sounds like BOC pure argon.
Used to be a bluey colour, now they have changed the colours to confuse things, they are green.

i guess they changed the colours to weed out all the 'missing' bottles.

They've put a tag on the newly issued bottles to help them spot any bottles coming back that aren't the same as the bottles that went out.

Even BOC is confused by the colour changes. On their website they suggest looking at the label on the bottle to find out what type of gas it is rather than try to judge it by the colour.

They are cylinders, not bottles. Bottles are for shampoo and beer not high pressure gases. Cylinder guide. A friend of mine went on the safety course and was told off for calling them bottles.

If you really wanted to be pedantic there are practical reasons why a pressurised gas container cannot sensibly be in the shape that is geometrically defined as a cylinder.

So we're into common usage in the English language where it always gets muddy. With both bottle and cylinder being in common usage when referring to containers of pressurised gas it would be a difficult call.

I hope your friend said the same to the instructor.

Malcolm is correct. A cylinder, strictly speaking, has flat ends (i.e. in the shape of a disc). Therefore, these receptacles are not cylinders. Jargon, of course, is different. If your friend was told off for not using the correct industry jargon, then fair enough. Like Malcolm, however, I would have argued the toss. None of my colleagues would have been surprised

I think the original point I had in mind was, "who cares what you call it - we all know what it refers to". I which case, I think I agree with you

"Bottle" sounds quite appropriate to me.

In fact now I think about it I call them both, in oxy acet bottles, gas bottles, but when I take a look at the gauge its to check how much gas iv`e got left in the cylinder, But like you say "who cares".
