zardoz post some pics,
I got my Portamig 185 today ( THX STEVE !! ) and am pretty impressed with it's design and build quality -- altho' I haven't fired her up in earnest yet, that'll be tomorrow after I've signed myself up to support BOC financially for the foreseable future !!! ( £70/yr for cylinder hire --- you got to be joking !!! "No, Sir we're serious" ) .
I've used the Forum Tutorials so far to load wire and adjust tension and chose gas etc and found them very helpful -- will also refer to them for settings once I actually start welding.

Dont know what build quality is like yet lol, im wait for a nod from steve to tell its on its way, but i will write a full review once i got it, inc build quality and welding smoothness

I can see nothing wrong with the build quality of my Portamig not that i know f all bout mig welders but it is as heavy as my old CYTRINGAN 180 so it must have some quality about it .It seems to weld well the wire feed is very smooth you can not here it running no shaking or rattleing
even when flat out
as i said me no mig expert but stick welding 30 odd years

The weight is added in the form of lead, to give it a quality feel

Look forward to your review Darren - should be interesting as most of the rest of us are upgrading from them SIPpy and Clarkey things so don't have a lot for comparison.

I haven't seen the 300 manual, but in order to understand my Lincoln Invertec, I read the Miller Syncrowave 25o manual, which is probably the same as the 300 manual.
I couldn't make too much sense of what the Lincoln manual was trying to explain, but after reading the Miller manual I finally understood. That really is an outstanding piece of work.

You have to remember, that a lot of manuals are written for people that have reasonable knowledge on the matter anyway.
I dont think i have ever read a manual for a welder, and i bet a few other of the full timers wont have either.
Machines like the portamig are so simple, you dont really need one.

I was flicking through a manual for a synergic pulse machine the other week... 1/4" thick this thing was, but most of it in Italian, German, Spanish & French anyway!
Ended up just confusing myself
and found the only real way was to have a play around with all the different features. Complicated stuff like that really needs demonstrating... even to experienced welders.
Did you get an on-site demo with your Hitachi systems Hitch?

There was a demo, but i wasnt there at the time.
A bit of fiddling with the controls and a few trial welds, i can get it running fine.
Double pulse, thats a bit trickier, but again, with a few
practice runs it becomes easy enough.

Just think what happends when the chinese start making pulse on pulse machines, instructions will be in badly translated English, then you got no chance

It's a bloke thing tho isnt it. New expensive machine? Unsure how it works? Read the instructions - no chance!!
I don't think i have read instructions for welders. Just turn it on and have a go. Have read the trouble shooting pages at the back once in a while.

Here are pics as promised. sorry about the quality but it was pitch black in the garage, so your lucky to see anything 
You can clearly see where the thin plastic 'rim' on either side, has broken, i reckon it to be maybe 2 credit cards thick at most, maybe 1.3ml
I will try and take some clearer pics in the morning.
