Grade of steel for a solid fuel throat plate

I need a new throat plate for my wood burning stove, a Morso Squirrel. Ebay has them in unnamed steel at about £60 but there's also hardox listed for about £80. Are they worth the extra? Anyone tried one?

The stove tends to be on everyday except in summer if that makes a difference.

Stainless would be better and would last longer than even the hardox.

I made one for my Stovax a few years ago (2019) and it's still perfect.
The previous mild steel one I made lasted about 3 years and was twisted for most of that time.

What properties do you need in a material to slow down that degradation process?

Does hardox have those specific properties?

All the Squirrel throat plate I see are of cast (cast iron or cast steel) construction. I have not seen 'cast hardox'.

To me, as above stainless would seem a better instant choice but if it has to be cast, you won't get that.

Dare I say inconel?

Hardox is work hardening. Don't think it would make much of an improvement.
It maybe "marketing" from someone who doesn't really understand it's uses.

My mistake, I was only looking at the titles, the steel ones are likely to be cast iron.

I've not a picture of the old one as it had a back boiler fitted. The stove was given to me as the boiler was said to be leaking. Being as I didn't need the boiler and the side bricks are in very good condition I cut the boiler up to remove it. It fits snugly against the bricks and is wider than the door.

The hardox one is fabricated (you can see the welds on the ears). Maybe they are in a business that uses hardox and they are making good use of the offcuts. Drop them a message and see if they would quote you on a 6mm stainless one.

the older type stoves use a cast plate whilst the newer type stoves just use normal steel plate

what you find its normally an 8-10mm thick plate is used for the throat plate also known as the deflector plate so it dosnt go directly up the chimney from the stove

stainless steel isnt used as its too costly in the thickness needed and its more as a reflective item anyway

it still suffers from heat degredation just like normal steel does it just takes a little longer before it fails

it goes flakey due to heat and then cold cycles

its like it peels itself off the surrounding metal

rocket stoves suffer alot due to this but at 2000f instead of 1000-1500f

Funny enough, that was my first thought. Digger buckets and skips is a more common use for the stuff so yeah, they probably have a fair few offcuts and a massive press brake to play with.

There is a flame baffle plate on our oil cooker that the flame jet hits constantly. The OE ones only last about 4 years before burning out. The first time I repaired it myself I used a thicker mild steel plate, that lasted 4 years too. It was replaced by 6mm hardox, that had done over 10 years. Last time it was serviced the plate was gone again & the engineer fitted a genuine oe one again as I had no suitable plate to repair it.

But that now gives me a spare frame & I'll be welding in some 6mm stainless & keep it as a spare!

The cost for stainless would have been over £100 as he'd have to order it in. I'm likely to go for the hardox as the chap's been helpful and he makes them himself I think. It'll keep a tiny bit of manufacturing in the UK alive.
