Grab rail on tiled stud wall

I didn't trust the stud wall when I put up 2 (a 42"/32") tv's in back to back bedrooms in my place, I cut the plaster board out on one side, inserted a wood/plywood in fill between the studs to fix to, refitted the plaster board filled and painted...

Depending on the required location of the handle, you could possibly create access behind a mirror and lower reinforcing/fixing panel into the stud wall, replace the mirror job done......

Yes, that is a good suggestion, but I'm going to try to find one good stud and hope for the best. There's already a similar grab rail fitted in the shower cubicle and as far as I can make out that's just screwed into the tiled plasterboard, unless the installer got lucky.

Rawlnuts might be a better option as the strain is spread gently and evenly.

Rawlnuts have a flange on them so do not sit flush with, but rather proud of, the hole into which they are inserted.

A 3D printed spacer could overcome that, again with some light sealant (just the top 180 degrees).

No 3d printing here. I've brought a few tools in the car and it's 1.5 hours each way.

You would be surprised at how much weight plasterboard can hold.
I routinely mount 65"+ screens off plasterboard. Not had one come down yet.

If you can get a stud fixing with a decent screw you are golden, short of pulling over the wall its never coming down.
With decent plasterboard fixings such as wall anchors or toggles you can easily put 50kg of weight off each fastener.
Modern LFDs are usually 30kg or under, technically you could hang the entire thing off one screw (not that you ever would of course).

Some of the (errrr) previous building mods/electrial work in this place have been eye opening.
I'm slowly getting them sorted, considering we purchased this off the last Post Master, I'm surprised Royal Mail allowed some of the wiring, while rewiring I've pulled out lead covered twin/earth cable and some of the Romec wiring has been awful....

Drill size 15mm. I realise the toggle has to fit through the hole, but I'd prefer something a bit more discreet, especially as the rail may be removed in the near future.

The last one I did was on a stud wall with 400mm centres, I manage to put the grab at a slight angle and find both studs, only 2 of the 3 holes were into the stud but with nice big fixings

I have some rawl plug type fixings put in the with a setting tool, for grab rails Id use longish ones, probablytool longto get a good spread on the plaster board. And fit rail on to a bed of sealant, dont over tighten or youll crack tiles, and wait till set before use.

I'm staying overnight to keep mum company, and I'll fit the rail in the morning. I hoped to identify the studs by finding the nail/screw heads with a flashlight, but someone did too good a job with a skim. I'll have a best guess for the stud positions, and have a poke through with something sharp. I can easily fill any small exploratory holes. I'll have a look to see what tools dad left behind in the morning.

As an aside, I found his HNC engineering certificate this week in a folder labelled "things to throw away". First time I'd ever seen it.
