Talk to BT they have standby generator sets for remote & not so remote exchanges, they are closing a fair few, we bought one complete with fuel tank cooling tank exhaust switch gear 25Kw for less than 2K.
The way-leave is good you could also ask for the cable to be underground over your property, then fit panels & sell back to them

I feel for your mate. I'm building a transformer house for a local Co, so they can stop using a 30Kw genny. Total cost is going to be around 200k and all the leccy borad are doing is supplying a transformer all be it a mother of one and wiring it up. They wanted 100k up front

yes it his land that the poles are on, around 8 poles if l remember correctly,
l will relay that information to him, if they would come down to under 4 grand for 4 hours work he would probably accept that but 33k is unbelivable

my land is next door but unfortunatly l have no poles to bargin with
so it will still be a generator for me

forget the genny 8 poles puts you in a good position for a recost.
had a friend with similar position and came out of it very well as i recall.
don't take any crap.

Listers, well... I bought a house that shared a 3kw 'Startomatic' with the neighbour. Around 20yrs old then. Fixed it up and found I had regular work on the many others in the area. Up to 55kva. One of them had not been serviced for around 5 yrs. (oil changes should be at 50 hrs on the old units) They really are bullit proof. The 5yr non serviced one had thick treakle in the crank case, but still started everyday on demand.

As for RPM control, it was all in the injector governer. The big flywheels tended to overcome the fluctuations of demand.

Even a half looked after Lister Startomatic will last 30 yrs plus on daily use. So, if seen, grab them.

Edit: On the airfield I work at in Norfolk (off grid), The genset was around 55kva. We kept a few storage heaters on line to smooth the voltage.

A mate who has an oyster farm near Oban, had trouble with his little Honda genny. Problem was, the scale that weighed the oysters caused the genny to fluctuate and the voltage variations screwed the scale. Same answer, told him to put a (small)heater in line to keep the genset busy so the scale was not a big % of the power required.

Extra edit... If the load is too small on a Startomatic, then it will sense the load (40 wt light bulb) and start. Then the system says it is too small, so ir shuts down, only to notice there is a load, so restarts. After several cycles, I would wander off into my neighbours house and switch of the offending light. Often at 2am..... A small price for life in paridise....
