Pretty much, its a forward shaft for power generation and in the end I think it goes from 2050kg to 400kg. It's just an awkward shape so that's the billet that comes in

I can’t imagine cleaning up 1600kg of swarf…
I guess the other question is how big was the lathe that produced the billets!!

Assume its in essence a fancy tube, all the weight being machined out of the middle.

That's cheating.....(using a CNC machine)

CNC is much faster, much easier to get accurate, and also 1000% easier to crash and wreck the work and/or the machine
