Hi, About 10 years ago at work in one our mess rooms a fairly new £160 four slice Dualit toaster, it hadn't even had its first PAT sticker, I found unplugged and on the floor, I asked why and was told someone put some bread in for toast and there was a flash and a plume of smoke out of it. Another was withdrawn from stores and pressed into service, the casualty stayed on the floor until I asked if I could have it, which was agreed. A cup of coffee and a meter and a dismantle found a piece of charred bread lodged between the element and the grille, it hadn't even blown the fuse. It now lives with my sister working on French electricity. Repeated a couple of years later with a mini oven which was in service with me as a back up until earlier this month, which reminds me I should investigate it.
The perks of working with people with no mechanical or electrical skills.

Can be frightening, I was in our canteen and saw one of the office girls poking around inside the (still switched on) toaster trying to get the bread out with an all metal butter knife as it was starting to burn
