Got a new Lathe - Raglan 5"

I'm picking up my new lathe in a couple of weeks It's a Raglan 5" its a little bit smaller than what i was looking for but for £400 i can't really complain

anyone have any experience of these?

No experience of them, but sounds like quite a capable machine. Good speed range. Power surfacing and sliding. Threading gearbox should eliminate a lot of messing with change wheels. Ways look to be flat so easy to recondition if worn.
Only down side I see is the rather small spindle bore

Yeah the reason the old guy was getting rid of it was he handmade snooker cues as a hobby and he couldn't fit the fat end of the cue through the bore so he bought a boxford instead and so this has been doing ****** all for years, tbh I probably won't be making anything too long most likely turning up little things for my cars so the bore won't be an issue for me I don't think

Methinks you are gonna love the power crossfeed

Whip the chuck off when you get it, see what fitting it is, later ones L00 fitting same as Harrison 140 and hard to find backing plates £75 G&M for a ******.

Might be able to drill out the spndle a little, did it with a Myford ML7 to 16mm.

See if he has the change wheels, the gearbox will only cover a small range of threads probably imperial and would need for metric and others. Would be costly to buy, especially from that rip off linked above.

Nothing more to be said its British.

Raglan Machine Tools

I just came across your post while doing a random search for Raglan lathes and saw you bought one last year.

I'm a member of the raglan machine tools user group on Yahoo.

We have copies of the manuals for the Raglan machines downloadable from the group and lots of people willing to offer help or advice re spares or problems.

..along with Drummond and any other good quality competition The Raglan is a cracking little machine, the rigidity of the design alone makes it a contender. One of the best things I did was join a user group M@tt, set of back-gears and shaft for the big Drummond = £9.25 postage, and much invaluable advice on setup, common problems etc.
At least yours isn't made in Taiwan

Raglan owner & New Member!



I found the group thro' a question Wayne placed on Ebay for a rather sad looking Raglan (beginning of June). Wayne mentioned history of these machines and ID numbers on rear web, near tailstock. I would be very interested in any info on this. All I can find on my Raglan is a number in the bed casting (1181), roughly half way on the rear inside of the bed.

I am in the process of setting up my Raglan, I was told when I purchased a late 5" under Myford ownership (it certainly has the Myford industrial cabinet) in my new workshop (I also have a fully restored ML7 that was born about the same time as me!). In my viewThe Raglan is a magnificantly engineered machine. The first problem I had was one of the 2 drive belts to the main spindle was missing, the other in a poor state. The "Lathes" website says these are no longer made, but gives the length a 686mm (all most exactly 27"). Being clever I got a couple of 27" belts (£5.86 incl postage) which do indeed just fit.

Fitting these was a nightmare because you have to remove the main spindle, which is easy enough. It is getting the blighter back in, lining up the keyways that is the problem! I did finally manage it but would not recommend any one else trying this, get the adjustable 'T' lock or similar adjustable belts!

Anyone who has views on lubricating the Raglan would be of interest. I am assuming grade 30 oil. There are loads of oiling points hidden away and a couple of grease points on the motor.
