Say you are in bed with the wife. And the tv is on. OK picture it. Right, you are watching the late night program about underwater welding for example. Surprisingly the wife is snoring by the time the program has finished.
Right do you
a) get out of bed walk across the room to unplug the telly? (Yeah right)
b) hit the standby button and go to sleep?
c) pull out your weapon and shoot the telly? (ho ho ho)
If you went for B) like probably most of the population then a standbyplug would benefit you.

fuel cell doesnt sound at all right but hang on... An electric car goes faster than a petrol one, cheaper and for longer? So whats the benefit of petrol?[/quote]
Diesel engines have fuel efficiency of 45% and petrol engines of 30%
The Electric motor in a car is 95% efficient but if you add all the other losses in getting the fuel energy to the wheels it paints a different picture
Energy efficiency’s of power stations are 33% for coal & up to 45% for gas. Grid transmission losses 9.5% HV + 15% local (transformers etc) = 23%
A typical charging cycle loses about 20%
Computing that lot gives electric cars a fuel efficiency of only 35%
(all figs approx)
oh & battery's (30% of car cost) have a 5 yr life
Petrol makes money for G W Bush![]()
howl with pain while hopping round the room and wake my wife up meaning I can no longer watch sexcetera
To echo the fat bloke from the bank advert, 'it doesn't work like that'![]()
wow, irondarren - thats a really good point - I mean REALLY. I used to program a Commodore 64 (oh those were the days) in assembler machine language. And it alway drove me nuts when I put white text on a black screen. It would always produce a BUzzzzzzzz through the telly speaker. Seems you have answered the question I had in my head for more than 22 years!!! (yes I know I am very sad!!!)
The question was why does this happen? Must have been the change in power and bad earthing in old 64's- logical of course.
