My workshop at home is insulated throughout with 35mm kngspan offcuts, roof & walls. The up & over doors have foil bublewrap unsulation stuck to them.
An oil filled radiator on low keeps it at a comfortable temperature with zero condensation. No tools or machines going rusty!
My boat workshop that i have just taken on is 1000 sq ft, fortunately its well insulated but has electric heating. No less than six 3kw electric heaters. Fire them all up & its going to be about £25 a day. The meter revs like a turbo.
Dont think i will be using them very often!
However if i need to do a laminating job i can just factor the cost in.

My workshop is about 1300 sq ft, it's made of 50mm kingspan metal clad panels for side and roof but its still freezing even with a relatively large paraffin torpedo fan heater. I suspect that's because I have a concrete floor pored into Kingspan metal deck so effectively a steel based concrete floor suspended 4 metres above the ground, its above my barn. It's like a big heat sink.
I think I'm going to section off a small part that I can keep warmer for winter tinkering.

A colleague on another forum is using a blown air camper/caravan heater. Run them on diesel, thermostatically controlled with the right bits. The instalation leaves abit to be desired, but he has just used a dishwasher as a degreaser/cleaner for a sump and a couple of T3 swingarms.

How about a reverse cycle air conditioner? It's been a while so correct me if I'm wrong but this is the most energy efficient electrically driven type of heating, much better than the standard heater. Probably not that common in the UK though so not sure how much one would be and probably not much chance of getting a used one.

Wood and multi-fuel stoves are excellent though, I installed mine last year through my flat roof and got everything from here: http://greymetal.co.uk/index.php?cPath=1 Good prices and very helpful over the phone as I was worried about sealing the flat roof properly. I just have a gas heater through in the main workshop area, it heats up the place really quickly and I just use it to take the chill off and then turn it off. I probably go through 1 to 2 refill 13kg gas bottles in winter. I use quilted shirts in winter and find them great.

Reverse cycle air cons are useless and use masses of lecky. At best they put out about half a kilowatt!

Think you'll find they are about 3 times better than the average electrical heater. They're also using them over here now for central heating, called something like air source heaters or something like that.

They must have improved then. To be fair its a long time since I had the misfortune to have to use one, but it was dire. The idea of running a motor to compress a gas to make it hot, then recovering the heat sounds like a really complicated way of doing things though, surely there are simpler ways of doing things without running a compressor?

When my garage is back up, I'm just going to stick a cheap 2nd hand oil boiler in there. They're all of a tenner off eBay on a good day.
A bit of flue and a pump, and pretty much job done. I want hot water in there anyway, so the boiler can do everything.
