Good face mask/filter for sanding.

I have a cheap mask I tend not to use when I'm sanding as I tend to sand out doors, but I want to get something a bit better so I will be more inclined to use it. I need to do some sanding soon and will likely be doing it in the garage due to the weather.

I wont use it for spraying as I have an air fed set up for that.

What would you recommend.

3m 7500 mask - very comfortable & a good range of suitable filters.

3M for me as well, I think it's one of the 6000 series ones I went for though. I used to use the 4251 as they were available for free but i prefer the the 6000. better fit bit comfier and you can select the filters to suit what you are doing.

Gone to 3M here 6000 series doesn't fog goggles etc up, I have replaceable filters on hand to change. Gave up on disposables as I used them long after they should have been binned.

I also have a few Sundstrom SR100 masks as I get the filters for free and they are decent masks. My air fed mask is also a full face Sundstrom.

Have a look at connecting your sander to a vacuum cleaner. You get much better results as well as a cleaner workshop. Also use an abranet hand block for small bits, again on the vac.

I will where I can, but to get down to bare metal through lots of coats of paint round my windscreen I will be using a poly strip disc on an angle grinder which is really messy.

I gave myself a headache last night just investigating this area using the powerfile.

I am currently restoring a 1968 mk2 cooper but I have used a hot air gun and scraper to remove most paint. Found it pretty easy and less messy, the strip and clean discs put a lot of heat in the panel and I was worried about distortion. I tried chemical paint stripper but again very messy to use. After the hot air gun I just ran over panel with abranet on a block or with my da dependant on access.

7500 half mask
6000 series full face
Versaflo supplied air and powered air

all free for me because I work in that industry

you should be fit tested when using 7500 half mask and full face... but I guess its better than nothing and home users wont have access to the different types of the fit testing kit.. so heres the 'manual' test to check if mask doing its job using 6035 filters... it can be done with the half mask and full face

put mask on

1. breathe out, and before you breathe in...squeeze 6035 filters (they are designed for this test), now try to breathe in normally... mask should suck in without any air leak noises/feeling indicating good seal to face, if you detect any leaks then wrong size, fiited incorrectly or some other problem ie your face shape.... when squeezing filters if you cant breathe in (easily) and have to release pressing filters... then that is a good sign mask is doing its job....

2. breathe in, and before you breathe out...place bottom of palm on the exhale part of half mask then breathe out, as above same scenario detecting leaks...but this time mask will go outwards... many people detect leaks on this one indicating where the leak will most likely occur, which sometimes can be resolved tightening the strap in that direction.
