Hi all,

In my eagerness to try and blag a deal on a machine and get a joke off my chest, I missed the introductions section

Getting into welding after the idea floating around in the back of my mind for a couple of years, looking to be doing flux core and stick welding in the short term, very interested in TIG when time and money allows.

Very much self-taught, having watched some online videos and courses and concluded "yeah I could do that" and "it's reassuringly hard to kill yourself welding". So that's good. Six years of cake decorating under my belt which apparently is very transferable so, funny how things work out.

Going after my first machine now, will be fabricating a cold air intake and performance exhaust for myself. If that goes well enough, my girlfriend has a Bedford Bambi / Elddis Nipper in need of rust repairs. These two jobs will be informing if I pursue a career!

Looking forward to hanging around and learning all I can.

Yes, I'm sort of having to make do for now... The flux core will be for the intake / exhaust and potentially stick for the rust repairs depending on the thickness of material. Do you think I should really be using gas on the exhaust / intake?

Really? Interesting. I was thinking I would mig/flux core anything that I could, and then get the stick out for the jobs where more penetration was needed / I couldn't get the pieces as clean as I would like. I'll have to add a bottle of gas to my layout and see if it's going to end up taking another payslip or two lol.

With automotive stuff, you are more likely blowing holes through, rather than struggling with penetration. Buy the right machine, it will do mig, with or without out gas and stick. Once you use mig with gas you wont go back. The only time I ever use stick is outside on heavy stuff. My small dc inverter works well on either a generator or 50m extension lead.

My best advice is to look down Brixton way for a guy that does MOT welding repairs and pay him to do it. Much cheaper in the long run, you will be buying twenty angle grinders before you know it if you stick around here!

Bet you didn't know that not only can you buy different coloured ones, they come in different sizes too.

Oh don't worry, my car has already had me buying more tools and bits than I ever dreamed I would... The thing was such a good deal, it even came with a free education in the mechanic trade!! I had to pay for the equipment though.

Nice intro and welcome to the madhouse!

For my two penn'orth please, just get a MIG and a gas bottle Argon/CO2 mix. Flux cored (gasless) and stick will just lead you headlong into a world of disappointment when it comes to car repairs and thin metal fabrication. I'm fairly sure that is what @addjunkie is alluding to rather than oxy/acetylene, just in case there is any confusion.
