Hi everyone!
Introductions... My name is Robin, and I'm a true "jack of all trades, master of none."
I'm a very confused individual, who spends an equal amount of time in nature, being a bushcraft enthusiast / woodsman / traditional English warbow archer, as I do being a lunatic petrol head.
I've spent my lifetime in this way, going from one extreme to the other, on a daily basis...
One day I'll be tucked away in the woods with Ray Mears, living off the land, or paddling along the river in my traditional Canadian canoe, or walking around the countryside shooting high draw weight longbows. However, by stark contrast, the next day I'll be galavanting around the city, fannying about in recording studios with more tech than you could imagine, or building / racing bikes and cars, or working on my project "expedition vehicle".
I've currently got a Suzuki GSX-R1000, (see below), which I'm tinkering with a lot, but the main reason I'm here is due to my (previously mentioned) expedition vehicle, an Isuzu DMax...
I've owned it for almost a year, and in the past 6 months I've turned it from a sleepy little pickup, into a more "purposeful" bit of kit, with 35" tyres and 4" of lift, as seen below...
The reason I've joined this forum, is that there are very few "off the shelf" components available for the DMax here in the UK, as opposed to over in Australia (where they are SUPER popular), and I want to equip myself with a MIG welder and get creating!
The main things I want to make for it, are a set of rock / tree sliders, and a custom rear bumper...
There are SO many awesome trucks over in Australia, which I constantly drool over on Instagram, and I've actually been chatting to a lot of the guys who own them / build them / fabricate the bits for them.
My first project will be some rock sliders, and I've got a pretty good idea of what I want to make, (plenty of example pictures saved). Having chatted to the Aussies, the specs of the tube etc that they are using over there is mainly 32NB / 40NB tubing, which I understand is 42.2mm od / 48.3mm od respectively, with a 3.2mm wall. The brackets to bolt the slider to the chassis are made from 8mm thick flat bar.
I want to get a MIG welder, and my research so far has shown me that the R-Tech 180 is going to be more than capable to do what I need, including welding the 3.2mm tube to the 8mm plate, but PLEASE jump in if I'm wrong...
I'm hoping to get the welder at the end of the month, at which point I'll be practicing a lot! Then I'll be looking into getting some tube, having the bends done for me by someone, and then welding them up. If things go well, I'll be looking at the JD Squared Model 32 manual tube bender, and some other bits too.
So that's me, and they are my plans! Quite wordy, but hell, it's good to talk right?!
