Shims can be anything in your reach, ally or brass is easier because it will flatten when the tool is tightened onto it, after you've snipped it to shape.
Best to get a QCTP, but equally useful is a tangential tool holder (Google/YouTube it) these really are the go to tool for every day turning and facing, I made my first one all on the lathe.
I have all the screws in the pulley for spindle oiling holes, they are 20 tpi .2475 in diam.

You will be required to post an introduction on Hobby Machinist forum, no problem, it's just the owners rules and seems to keeps things friendly.
BTW my Atlas is 1941, apparently these where shipped over in their thousands for armaments production, so we both own a usable little bit of history, although yours has more cool provenance!
