what are these like as daily drivers?

i see plenty for sale on ebay around the 2002 age. what are the engines like and how reliable are they/is the 4 motion system?

And no, before anyone says it, im not tying to buy a golf instead of a LR lol

its not for me and i cant insure an r32...

the mrs wants something small, i want her to have something 4wd as she works in a snowy area. she is ok in the snow but there are hills to contend with and my mothers old ignis awd did well on the hills...

i know a 2.8 is a bit of overkill for a woman who very rarely breaks 60mph but its the 4 motion and relaiblity im interested in

I had one on demo a long while back. Effectively its fwd until there's slippage then the centre clutch locks the rear like a freelancer (or that's what the vw salesman told me). Drove nice

If I remember correctly it's a 90 / 10 split..
10% to the back wheels.
So not really a decent awd vehicle

Audi use torsen box. Think that makes it permanent 4wd. Or there's mitsys or scoobys

good motors, they are drinky but they go and drive well.

the 4wd system they use is called haldex, tho a lot more reliable than anything freelander. the whole powersplit thing dosent really apply. they are primeraly frount wheel drive but when slip starts to occour all the torque can be tramsmitted to the rear wheels in something like a 1/16th of a reloultion of a wheel, it's actualy a very capable system. tho torsten top it every time

Audi seem to change what 4wd system they use ...idepending on what model.. I'm sure the a3 quattro use the same system as the 4motion..

scooby's and mitsy's are expensive for her to insure and not the cheapest for me...have been thinking about a forester for her but insurance is the issue...my step father had an a4 quattro and that was endlessly putting up lights relating to the AWD...not saying they are crap just my only experience of one was poor

You could always go for a non turbo impreza? Not the same I know..
Evo would be my choice but you would need to make sure it has the ayc pump connected still and that it's working properly.
I know when I was having trouble getting quotes on a modified 200sx I went with a company called sky insurance ... and the car was no more expensive too insure than my oil burning golf

They are ok but thirsty beasts as they are weighty cars with a v6 lump.
Not particularly fast cars but will do all that's needed easy enough.
R32's are more fun but the old corrado vr6's were more fun imo.

I had an a3 tdi Quattro sport of the age you are looking at, an rated it very highly.

the Audi vs VW badging of Quattro vs 4motion is all down to the platform. The golf and the a3 (and the tt) share the same platform, and use the 4motion system with the Haldex diff. A4s are on the same platform as the Passat, which uses the Audi Quattro system, with a proper transfer box.

Given that I have also owned land rovers since I was 16, in the snow I always preferred the a3 - unless the snow was too deep for it to get through.

Never had an issue with the Haldex in mine. Did well over 70k miles in 3years.

I absolutely love the corrado but couldn't get my size 12 feet safely on the pedals, I kept hitting more than one at once, shame 'cos it's a lovely car and goes well. I don't suppose your better half would have feet as big as me so not a problem.

What about a Fiat panda ? they are 4x4...

i've had a lot of vw 4wd's and they genraly work well an reliable.

couple of golf syncros, A4 quattro, golf 4 motion, passat 4 motion. i've actualy yet to have a problem with the 4wd system on any of them other than smashing a rubber doughnut on the propshaft of the golf 2 syncro, ( but id did have a bigger engine than it was meant to and had just been 6 times round a traffic cne when it went ) the A4 quattro 1.8T sport was rolling roaded at 230 bhp ( someone else lavished it with shiney bits ) then a mate bought it he was nasty to that car then i bought it of him and was nasttyer to it. used to drag horse box places the truck wouldn't go. towed a 7.5T truck up the air ballon hill with it, and i was activly trying to blow it up for the last 3 months i had it, then i gave it to mate as an engine donour, he's still ragging about in it. it's had a few sets of brake pads 2 wheel bearings and some oil changes.

Golfs aren't very small and 4WD plus a V6 sucks fuel.

One of these will do it, but frankly unless your missus is going offroad decent snow/allseason tyres on a 2wd car is a much cheaper solution.
