going from gas to gasless.

hello all,i have posted on here b4,but am still new to welding.i recently bought a mig welder of unknown make,but most likely its either an early clarke or early sealey.i think it is a gas only welder as there is nothing on the front of the welder to allow easy polarity change.i have bought a small reel of gasless flux cored wire so i can have a go outside as i have no garage in which to practice.i have been told i shd b able to practice ok with this with the welder set as is,however ive also been told it wont b very good because the polarity needs changing for gasless wire.i have pulled the top of the welder off to see if i can do this from inside the welder.i have taken a pic and added a couple of notes for which lead goes where.am i being naive by thinking i just have to swap these 2 leads around to change polarity? the clamp for the earth lead will loosen to allow the lead to b fed into the welder further,allowing it to reach the back,i kno this will shorten the amount of lead on the outside,but dont think it will leave it short enough to become a problem.

hopefully it came out ok,and someone can tell me if swapping these leads will make it perform better with gasless wire.

If there are two wires for the trigger, then swapping those 2 wires will be all you need.

If it has 1-wire for the trigger, then it will be more complicated.

lol,typical.knew it cdnt be simple.i have put it back together at mo.(wifey due back from work,and welder stripped out in kitchen isnt good for me sex life),however,i do believe there were 2 thin wires from trigger,plus the thick earth lead type wire that i highlighted.do u mean if i swapped the 2 thinner wires,this wd suffice? i will take a better photo before i try this,and hopefully u can verify this will b all i need to do.if it is the case this will make the earth pos. and the gun neg. will it? if i have that the right way rnd.thanks for your help so far.

No, I meant swap the two big wires.

If there is only 1 trigger wire, then it uses the heavy wire as part of the trigger circuit. If you swapped polarity, the trigger setup would need to be changed to use the other big lead.

You can try using as is, some gasless wire works fine on either polarity.

ok thanks.i see what you mean now.i am certain there is a 2nd wire,but will have to check.i had a quick go on some scrap metal to check the welder actually works.which it did for a short while.i tried it with the switches set to max and blew a fuse.tried again with fuse changed and it seemed to go ok.though i was just laying beads on a bit of 3/4mm sheet.will try swapping polarity if i can at some point just to see how much if any of a differance it makes.thanks again.

p.s. hope the keyboard is sorted now too.lol

Space bar and shift key have probably got hobnob crumbs under them but the rest look ok.
Just kidding, we have foreign members (and a few old'uns too. ) on here who most likely find text speak quite difficult to read.

ok.I just find it hard to snap out of 'text speak'. but i will do my best in future.
On the downside,i found a wiring diagram of the torch for my mig.it appears it only has 1 trigger wire and the thick main wire,so i am guessing i cannot simply swap the leads to convert to pos-earth clamp,neg.torch.which is a bummer.Oh well.
