I found this situation interesting but probably not useful. Using 0.6mm mild steel or stainless wire with wire speed on max, it melts into a large, slow blob, one every second or two. I dont think my wirespeed is fast enough for 0.6mm wire. Argon maintains a stable arc and melts the parent, I imagine a bit like tig. I found thin sheet easy and the blob can be dropped to only melt the parent. I doubt this can make any bad weld stronger, but does improve the appearance. Penetration is good but the HAZ is large.
Got a spool of 0.8mm to try out tomorrow, I hope I can get normal transfer and avoid this.
Im aware argon is the wrong gas, but it seems to work and I like using it. I intend to be using mig more on alu. No space for multiple bottles.
