Glasses and welding

I have reading glasses and use them for computer. In general do others on here wear glasses when welding if only reading glasses.
Reason I ask is I find I was having to get close to the weld at the college course, my eye sight has got worse since I did the non voc course.

I need glasses for close up work, but welding is not like reading, more like using the computer, you are focusing at quite a long range not really close up. But sometimes close up.
When I get new specs made I make a big deal about needing long depth of field.
Drives me mad.
I make a fuss about it. some plonker does not listen.
I get given useless specs.
I go back and make a fuss and get specs like I asked for.
Bloody irritating, the last three times this has happened.
I have a pair of glasses I bought in a supermarket in France years back and they are perfect, massive depth of field. I end up taking these to the opticians to show them.

Hi Andy, i wear specs all the time now,never had any issues apart from sometimes getting sparks flying over and down inside helmet and burning little craters in the lenses ,
Did you have the shade adjusted correctly on your helmet ? You might need to get your eyes checked out, sign of old age

I don't use reading glasses yet but I am only just managing to get by without them - I keep meaning to get hold of one of those cheater lenses for my welding helmet which I hope might be a solution to save wearing reading glasses while welding even when I need them for other close work??

I have to wear glasses for most things. was given them when the optician was so worried about my eyesight that he didn't want to let me drive home without glasses...

don't wear them for welding though, they make it a lot harder to see the puddle for me.

Hi Andy, I wear glasses all the time and find it ok. I had thought of trying the stronger lens thingy on the helmet but the decided it wasn't worth it as it's not really a problem and then I'd be taking my glasses on and off, loosing them and probably breaking them!

I now use a 2.5 diopter cheater lens taped in front of the helmet lens instead of glasses, works a treat for me. around £7-50 from most good welding suppliers.

Thanks, I'll see how I get on with glasses this week and look in to the cheater lens. I didn't know they were available.

Seriously, yes I do wear readers; Ive just ordered two new pairs of differing strengths, one for close-up for when I'm peering gloomily at circuit boards or getting my head down for some TIGing.
I really need about three lenses: one for computer distance, one for reading and one for tech-monkey work, but as yet Tesco don't offer three for the price of one...

I confused my optician by insisting on varifocal READING glasses to do exactly those three taks. I wear them for welding as well as computer and very close work. Especially useful when working in confined spaces under cars when you cannot always get your head/eyes in the right position to see through the reading bit of my 'normal' variofocals.
