have seen a car be sent out of the workshop with the hubnut barely tightened. old guy was in tears when he brought it back as he had been carrying his young granddaughter in it and it had scared him that badly

Not that rare, unfortunatly.
Nearly had a JCB diff end up empty at work after a dealer service. Same machine had three out of four wheel hubs overfilled by a considerable amount after the same service.

the old man had a not very old A3 TDI DSG fortunatly on lease that was written off by a loose sump plug after its first service.

problem is when the sump plug rattels out the oil gets blown all over the place and sits on the undertray, those things loose oil pressure when makeing progrss the engine has gone bang before youve pulled over it's not like you can dip the clutch and turn the key back 1 notch. not sure if it was the engine grenadeing the set the oil on fire or it geting splatterd on the exhaust but the car went up

That was the thing with this, I noticed oil under the car when I drove away from home one day so when leaving the workshop at night I checked and nothing. I suspected someone else had been parked in my usual spot at home and had left the oil. Next day there seemed to be more oil at home but it was raining so I thought maybe just spreading in the wet. I swapped places with the other half and again oil underneath but that evening when I left the workshop there was no oil again so I was puzzled. What it turns out was the leak was so slow it was collecting in the tray and as the road has a slight slope where I park at home it was running over the lip in the tray, at the workshop the road is level so it stayed in the tray.

Years ago I did volunteer driving jobs for the local council arts and entertainment dept, one job was a trip from Lancaster down to Essex to pick a van load of sound gear PA and back line speakers for a concert. I went to the council depot to pick up the bedford van ..."it's just had a full service and it's full of diesel " the guy said as he handed me the keys ....So I jumped in and headed off to the M6 heading south...I was just passing forton services and BANG ...and then the oil light came on ....I pulled over and checked the dip stick ...and it was dry ...game over ...

Leaving a drainplug loose is the sort of thing our apprentice fitter would have done, I found myself constantly running around checking what he had done/not done. Seemed more interested in his phone , twitterbook and facetube. Bare in mind this nipper had come from a college sporting a cert for three years of job avoidance in mechanical engineering, was asked to dump the oil on the foden and did exactly that, about 15 gallons of black engine oil running across the yard. I could write a book on his antics, then he decided after wasting years of everyone's time he wanted to be a van driver.

I bought a VW T4 & the owner told me I'll get it serviced for you before you collect it. I told him no I'll do it. Glad I did as I found 4 plugs finger tight & the oil filter not screwed up properly. Must have been like that since the last service

Seems so common, getting young people who are both interested in their job and capable can be very challenging.

When I was in college some years ago on an engineering course all but two of us were there to pass the time, not learn new skills. They get pushed onto courses after school because it looks better to say that the country has x amount of people in further education, rather than straight into unemployment.

I really doubt that many of them now will be doing good jobs, if working at all, and I doubt even more that they'll be any use.
