My local council have partnered with Vodafone to deliver true fibre up to every house in Milton Keynes. I know this has happened or is happening in other towns

Its been pretty painful on my estate and although the chaps seem to be going at it flat out, they have to work around people wanting to get in and out of their drives and the street! I think they have underestimated the effort big style.

I'm not too grumpy about being marooned in my own drive for the best part of a week and having to ask if I can go out, the lads have a job to do.

What does annoy me a bit is what appears to be a stitch up between the council and Vodafone, its Voda fibre so you have to contract with them to get the touted 900 mbps (up and down - woohoo!)

£48 unlimited monthly including phone line, need to find out more but feels anti competitive?

They need a certain amount of sign ups before they will do the grunt work,
why would anyone do the infratructure and not expect payback?

My Virgin media bill is £46 for 200Mbps. with no telly or other services at that.

£48 for 900Mbps? Snatch their hand off.

Agree to an extent, but reads as a promoted venture by the council..

And yes it does look like a good price
And no one is being forced to take it

You would not be able to "switch" supplier

Sounds like a good deal all round to me. I'm sitting on 3mb at the moment. They just run a fibre cable over my drive way which has got my hopes up, but not a peep as to whether I can get a link into it...I'd pay double that for those speeds

I'd jump straight on that, we pay around £40 a month and get about 15Mbps, you can imagine what that's like in a house of 8 students.

It’s more like 2mbps.

4G is faster on my phone, but then it is a mile to the cabinet.

There are some providers giving unlimited 4G now. With a roof antenna and a 4G enabled router you could be sorted for things like Netflix and general browsing.

This is an option I am considering, Virgin do an unlimited contract for 25 if your already a customer. As we get 3 currently and are more than a mile from the box, so no chance of anything fast quickly.

same here, disadvantage of being in the rsend of nowhere, things like tinternet get ignored due to lack of customers. No chance of fibre or anything "exotic" here. Now that I've started the new business which needs a video conference line, they're proposing a "fixed" 4G mobile type token thing for the office, so we're seeing if we can get that sorted. At the moment, it's something like 3-4 mbps via the archaic telephone lines, so not exactly rocket speed. The only benefit, is that there's not many people using that so the speed is relatively stable.

Numpty question . Even if you have high speed at the nearest cabinet, is the signal still not 'strangled' by the copper wires between your property and the green box?

If your with in the magic mile youll get quite good speeds.

You only have copper if its fibre to the cabinet on your street. From what I read the OP will be getting fibre to the property in which case should get the promoted speed unless they throttle it upstream. It does sound a bit anti competitive if you HAVE to sign up with Vodafone, who owns the fibre infrastructure? the council or Vodafone? if its Vodafone doing the infrastructure then fare enough but if its the council I would say its a bit iffy. That said, I would still rip their hand off for that speed at that price.

Yep - per RDR.
Already have fibre from local exchange to the street cabinet via BT, what Vodafone are doing is presenting fibre right up to the houses.
For the top speed option @£48 it says you get voice as well but can't see much detail on that yet, they will need to provide a new number, so could this be without BT line rental I wonder and using VOIP?

That's what I've got at the moment. Contention is an issue though; wee small hours when all the online gamblers, game-players and pornstars/viewers have gone to bed, it's great, whizzing along at over 50Mb/s and if I were a bit closer to the cell and had pukka antennae I'd get more out of it.
In the morning and for most of the day it steadily gets slower and the hardest hit is post 4pm when the kiddies get in from school. There's another hit at 8pm when the families settle down to Netflix, etc. On its worst showing it plummets to 1 or 2 Mb/s but that's still usable for net browsing, just.

The village is being connected to Truespeed at 200mbps @ £48 & I think with phone, my 30+ seems to be stable whatever the time of day if a lot of people go that way perhaps I will get a few Mb\s faster seems fast enough for me with the phone package I have it is about £5 cheaper.
Don't seem to get any buffering & can send 40Mb files on email ok
