I've had a lot to do with steel boats during my time as a yacht surveyor. Jotun every time. With good prep and reasonable temperature during application you'll be doing an excellent job.

I’m looking for something to brush on underneath my Scimitar (just the underside, rough fibreglass). Does anybody have any recommendations? Jotun Penguard HB comes up a lot on Google but firsthand experience would be welcomed! Thanks

I don't think I would bother sending it back provided there are no leaks and the lids are undamaged.
Why?
Because the same may happen again!

They do look pretty bad though. How were they packed?

Tip - never sign for anything without checking it first!

Well I have replacements in my mitts and the dinged up ones are back in the sellers'.

The new ones have some transit damage but nothing like those babies so I'm gold

Had a wee play on some scrap to begin with but quickly found that a minimal mix went a whole lot further than expected (100:25 by weight as volume was just not accurate at that scale.)


So just did the insides of the item anyway. Figure however poor it turns out I can hide it by shutting the lid

It goes on fine, a bit syrupy and the foam brushes, the foam brushes? Well let me tell you about the foam brushes! They are absolutely pants Drag marks galore and a rotten finish lol

Next pass I went to a cheap brush knowing I was going to bin it afterwards. Much better finish


I will say that the DFT is /perhaps/ a little high as the hinge doesn't fit and the lid won't shut but that's not the paint's fault so much as the applicator/ee Seems easy enough to sand back with some P100 but not soft in the slightest. Rock solid hard. So much so I cut myself on a little paint ring from a cup which had dried overnight - this stuff is a plastic but I just hadn't clocked how strong it was!

Really pleased with the result and it seems to be just the job. Easy to mix a small batch and it cured dead on schedule. I might invest in some thinners to see if I can get a better finish with two thinner coats but then again I'm lazy so may well not

The Jotun is very good value. I have used Leigh's paints in the past. They are World leaders in epoxy paints. British company but recently taken over by the Yanks. Their paint is used in all sorts of industries including the Forth railbridge!
The drawback? The price!

Still made in the UK.

This is the one I think I will use on my trailer though - it seems to have come down in price a lot. It has added glass flakes for increased abrasion resistance although probably very over the top!

Are you media blasting the trailer before painting? One thing to remember is when they put in extra stuff like aluminium, glass flake then you lose out a bit on it's adhesive ability. Media blasting is a good idea with glass flake.

I’ve just used jotun87 on my MG project on the fuel tank (and inadvertently spilt some on my work jeans ).

It sets like rock but still retains a touch of flexibility (according to the Jean pinch test ) .

It’s threads of this nature that put me on to it , and if it’s used on oil rigs off shore and on boats... there’s a reason for it .

I will admit to being a brush snob ever since I bought my first Purdy brush many years ago. I am fussy about the results I get from brush painting & the Purdy brushes are superb.
I bought a set of those Harris brushes to use for cleaning stuff but I tried one out to paint something & I was impressed. They leave a very nice finish, though they may shed an odd hair and perfect as a throwaway brush. Now I keep my purdy brushes for house painting & use the harris ones for the garage.

I’m new to painting and this has given me lots of info & confidence to bash on with some Jotamastic 87 - thanks all for both asking and answering previously.

What top coat would people recommend to put on top? I’m in the process of making trolleys, stands and storage frames to keep in the workshop so I want something that’s compatible with the J87, has a few colour options, hardwearing, UV resistant and inexpensive to have a tin of a couple of colour options kicking about.

You can whack pretty much anything over the top of 87. 2k stuff is going to be more hard wearing but you don't need to overcoat 87 (epoxy) especially if it's not sitting outside in direct UV. 87 is called a primer because it works extremly well as a primer as it bonds well to what is being coated, is universally compatible with pretty much everything being overcoated but chalks up over time if in contact with sunlight. But if it's for stuff inside 87 is great as the topcoat too.

A lot of 2k paints will contain isocyanates so watch out for that if you are spraying. 87 doesn't so another plus for it.

Ah saw you UV resistant bit. How are you applying the paint? Have you got air fed equipment if spraying? How large quantities are you wanting? 1k or 2k paint? What type of finish are you wanting; gloss, satin etc?
