Getting rid of gas bottles

Posted a few days back about how to get rid of unused HP cylinders. Last time I tried to get some collected 3-4 years ago, it proved to be impossible, as no one in the slightest bit interested.

Tried calling again on Monday, and this time 4 cylinders all picked up within a week, so guess things must be getting much more difficult for gas co's and they are now very interested in picking up unused cylinders.........................

So anyone with unused cylinders, make a call and expect to see the back of them in a few days.

Not sure I would want to cut top off acetylene?

I can see propane ones being very useful, but not quite so sure about HP welding ones?

Acetylene are filled with kapok fibres I believe, so there is no way you could de -gas one safely, i wouldn't go there.

Are they steel or iron ?

HP cylinders are steel.................had them all collected by gas co's within a week, so no need to dispose of them. Things must be getting harder for them, as no chance of getting cylinders collected about 3 years ago...............

Years ago i was clearing out an industrial unit, from a fabricator that had done a runner without paying any bills, must of been 25 / 30 BOC cylinders, they refused to collect them, and asked us to bring round for free the cheeky gits ?

Can you imagine how much one of them cylinders costs to manufacture ?

They will soon collect if you send them an invoice for storage............

I would guess BOC would claim that they have not entered into a contract with you to store them, and file your letter under B for bin ?

The cylinders belong to them, you have asked them to be removed, and if they refuse to do so, then cant see any reason why they shouldnt have to pay storage?

I bet their lawyers could though

It should only cost you £50,000 in legal fees to prove your point, good luck

They are normally very happy to get them back, a high pressure cylinder has a replacement cost of around £300 so it makes sense to grab them where you can. BOC have had a financial kicking though lately so maybe keener than usual.

We're working on a local job and there are some old BOC cylinders in the building that is being refurbished that our Client asked us to deal with/take away.

I mentioned it to the lad at our local branch and said i wasn't keen on us transporting potentially dangerous cylinders....he said there is no problem getting them picked up, just ring the 0800 number. Not got round to it yet mind.

Aim them in the direction of your local BOC depot, do some ballistics maths, and knock the valve off with a sledge hammer.

There's a big thing about orphaned cylinders, you could take them to the council tip but it's frowned upon these days. A lot went to scrap yards in the boots of cars. When said cars were being crushed or baled they often went bang, so now also frowned upon.

Gas companies have had a real kicking from fire authorities so are now obliged to pick them up if it's clearly marked who the owner is. I've recently finished working on a case where someone operating a grab was seriously injured when the jaws of the grab crushed the car and caused a bottle to explode, bottle was hidden in boot of car
