Getting Morse Taper cut into Tailstock

I've got a new lathe and she's a spindle turner from a chandlers in BC Canada. Unfortunately the tailstock doesn't have a taper in it so was wondering if SWK could advise on any good places to get it done and approximate cost. It'll be a MT2 minimum but most likely a MT3.

You've got a lathe. Isn't that the king of job it's made to do?

Chuck a Morse tool in with the taper on the outside, put a clock in the toolpost and adjust the compound for zero runout on the back of the taper. Take the barrel out of the tailstock and bore out using the compound.

Job done.

And what about the tang?

It is not necessary to have a tang on tailstock tooling, the fit is just friction, the tang is used on morse taper drills held directly in a drill press, to provide the drive.

ive got a no2 morse taper drill with 3mt flutes on and a 3mt reamer but your 2 far away to borrow it ucan drill near enough with them then bore out a few though short of the size required then finish off with the reamer

Thanks all for the advice. Probably a bit of explanation will help: it's a wood lathe (I think) and I've used a lathe precisely zero times in my life so although I'm comfortable with the tools this job is beyond my skills. The lathe is a bit big with a 10' bed and I'm not sure it would be capable of doing a taper itself.

Really I bought it knowing it a) wouldn't fit into my shed and b) that the wife would skin me. One look at that lovely Toshiba motor and I was smitten though. Weighs in at sixty kilos just for the motor. Smooth as silk and just effortless. Err, did I say that in my outside voice? :blush:

It looks like you can get the barrel out so should drop the weight a bit. Tail stock is 40kg on its own.

u can quite easily make a tool rest for a wood lathe

No, unfortunately no rest. Few face plates and bowl attachment on headstock. To be perfectly honest it's just too big for me so I'm looking to get it as saleable as possible and move it on. Lesson learned - buy with head not heart!

Edit: yep like brightspark says I was just going to make something for it.

I hope so. It's just too big for me really. Moment of madness. It's such an unusual thing and well made I don't want to break it up for scrap.

What's the centre height?

Not got it on front of me but about ten/twelve inch base to centre.

Oh yeah the chainsaw chain - best buy ever. Chainsaw but no chain brake so no-one would touch it. Got a nice wee 52cc two stroke donor engine for a fiver

Try using a large morse taper drill in the drill press without a tang, if the drill catches it can slip and score the taper, yes I agree the tang is to aid extraction, but it also provides a positive drive.

If the taper in the quill is good and the drill inserted well it should not slip, if it does there is something amiss to start with, Also if a large drill taper slips its liable to shear the tang off.
