Getting full use from drill bits

Probably cheaper than a badly ground drill bit & the trouble/cost created by oversized holes though.

Yeah you can understand the theory behind using them once, but some of them were completely unused - the fitters would just throw them in the bottom if they had any left over at the end of their shift rather than take them back to stores - same with nitrile gloves, sealant etc

Got taught it in my apprenticeship.

Always got told if you cant sharpen a drill bit you shouldn't be using them. And same for sweeping the garage floor.

Snapped my only 5.5mm drill bit the other day in the side of a trailer drilling 5mm angle.
Out with the little parkside 75mm cordless grinder. Grind the angles, sharpen the cutting faces. And go again with a stubby drill bit.

I always grab all the drill bits from colleagues to take home, as they cant be bothered to sharpen them and end up binned.

Typical folk. Idle gits. They'd change their habits it it was costing them personally.

my favourite is sharpening all my carbide drills up before they get to blunt with the green wheel on grinder . allways sharpening my 6.0mm drills up. they cost 4 quid each bosch multidrills you can sharpen them 3 times before they get worn on the sides of the tip and start binding and locking up

Mr @roofman I think that drill should have both ends chopped of and start again, they do sell chuck keys for chucks

Theres truth in that..sick of tired of watching young lads dragging a stiff brush slow towards them and pushing a soft brush fast forward..you tell them there is a proper way to use a brush and they look at you as if you have said you where with there mother last night

grind three flats on them before you start using them in a cordless ,, that way they dont slip ,,, ever.
They dont actually have to be that big , 3 or 4 mm is plenty and by hand and eye is close enough .

I do it with 10 and 15mm masonary drills to any length I want I sharpen a proper cutting edge on them as well so they drill steel and wood .you can guarantee drilling through a wall and theres a wooden beam smack against it on the other side

had to drill a 25mm hole in bronze on the lathe. the motor got hot and so did the bronze it was squeeling

I belong to a bunch of folk who were taught how to move a half drilled hole about to get accurate positioning with a centre punch .. and to lube boiler pipes with a banana skin ,,,, lol
these days folk dont even get taught how to sharpen drill bits ,,, how times change.

There was a time when I found it easy to sharpen drills on a grinder irrespective of how good the light was. These days it's a case of training a light right over the wheel and putting an older pair of reading glasses over my bi-focals to see what I'm doing. I look like one of those idiots wearing 4 pairs of glasses in that TV mail-order specs ad.

It helps if you’ve got a good grinder.

my Clarke pedestal grinder is crap for drill bits. Too much vibration. The wheels probably don’t help, cheap machine mart things.

I dare not grind any drills up on that now, it ruins them.

I’m on the lookout for a big three phase grinder. Like a union or a viceroy
