Generic screen wash pumps?

Ive got a landrover defender. The screen wash setup on it is pathetic - both the jets and the pump.

You cant fit better jets, as the flow from the pump is so poor.


There are companies that sell pump adapters etc to mount onto the existing washer bottle, but im not fussed about mounting some sort of in-line pump somwhere else, and then ill fit some cheap generic jets (which i already have).


So, can anyone recommend a pump?

Ive looked about the place, but, under "specifications" the ads give details like "12v" and 100mm x 50mm etc, when, really, i want some sort of indication of LPM to convince myself that it wont just be as rubbish as the original pump.

Any ideas?

get one from a saab 93 2008 onwards you wont be dissapointed! might blow the bonnet off though

I've used the washer bottle off 200TDi Discoveries.
Two screen pumps and one for the headlamp wash which I just ignore.
The screen pumps are nice and powerful.

The optimil kit uses a d2 headlight washer pump, and an adapter, but ive got better things to spend £250 on...

I was thinking a generic pump may have its own mount, and then all id need to do would be to make up an adapter for the washer bottle.

I dont really want to replace the bottle, as its a wheel arch mounted one, and pretty "out of the way", whilst a generic bottle would be square and have to fit "somewhere"

Is that is the kit that has a dummy washer pump machined out of billet that the headlamp pump then plugs into?

Yep, its got a, sort of, figure of 8 thing with one half the OD of the original pump, and the other half the ID of the replacement pump.

It also has a "tube" thing to allow the water connector to mate up.

Thank you for your offer - i think, however, if im going to spend the time doing it, ill try and acquire whatever is the "best" as the pump itself will cost me less than the "tuit" that ill need to find to get the job done!


I figured id turn up something on the lathe to match the inlet of the original, and have a "hosetail" sort of thing on the other side, but, its occurred to me that the pipe is probably kept in the tank by the pump body itself. Ie you probably have to have "something" on the tank, in order to stop the pipe just falling out.

I saw a photo of the optimill bit on a forum. Ill see if can find it again, as it may be easiest to just copy that?

A lot of the pump to reservoir grommets have a filter to stop debris getting into the pump, screenwash can turn to sludge and partially block the filter. Might be worth checking?

Headlamp washers off various LR products but be warned various hoses may blow off inside the dash.
