Generator for running small workshop

Looking at buying a diesel generator to run my spot welder 6kw, but i use at 1mm+1mm most of the time/ 3kw compressor/ and 160 amp welder.
Won't be using all at the same time as I work on my own, up to now Im interested in buying a hyundai 7.2kva diesel generator, what are your guys opinion on buying a £1000 generator to run my equipment, I don't do it full time so probarbly do 2 hours a night and a few more hours at the weekend.

Can anyone shed some light on whether this is a good route to go down, using my parents power at the minute, and would rather just fill up with red diesel when i need to.

Noise might be a consideration, are there any close neighbours who might complain and scupper your plans?

Why not use the power that's there? Give them a payment to cover part of the electric bill...
Fair few kWh from the mains to equal buying and running a genny....

Is 7.2kw man enough... or will you have to keep turning off the compressor when you need the spot welder....

Noise isnt a consideration, we live on a farm (with single phase power) and the generator will be located in a brick outhouse next to the workshop along with the compressor i have. I will just have to route the exhaust out of the building, and there is loads of ventilation as the 2x doors on there are galvanised weld mesh type doors.

Also need something which will fit in and out of a standard door width incase i need it in other areas.

I think 7.2kw is man enough as i wont really use everything all at the same time.

I am also starting doing powdercoating, and dont want to run the 3/4kw heater from the mains also.

And now winter is coming i wont feel too bad about leaving the space heater on for a bit longer.

All the fancy named modern generators on EBay etc are 3000 rpm Chinese clones, if it's a hobby and reliability isn't essential and you aren't running it day in day out it may be ok, if you want reliability you need a 1500rpm AVR equipped 'real machine' with a proper engine and quality alternator, I would over size it for whatever you want to run within reason.

As said look for a proper pice of kit, also if you can get a 3 phase generator you will have more options for expansion.

Give your parents a lump sum of £1000 and then weekly the same amount as you'd spend on diesel ?
Install a meter in the supply to the workshop so you can accutatley calculate the emount of electricity used and reinburse parents accordingly ?
Have electricity company split supply and bill you seperately for the workshop ?

Indeed just install a meter on the feed to your shed. Used ones cheap as chips on the Bay of evil. How do I know this ?

I have a similar sized Hyundai generator, as our power has been known to drop out due to old over head lines, basically we have it just in case for the freezers and central heating pumps. I would not suggest trying to run welders and a workshop from it, the ramp up will probably be a bit slow for the initial surge of the weld, or compressor start up. They are also noisey, and quite thirsty. I have run a 175 amp inverter welder from mine, it doesnt like it, but works.

If you want to be self sufficient running your generator on the farm red diesel, buy a much larger 3 phase machine 15 kva something like that.

To run your heater 3 kw, and your compressor say 2 kw, thats your small genertor flat out.

A 3kw heater costs about 45p per hour to run.

I have a pretty new Hyundai, DSY8000 I think.

It runs both a Sealy supermig 200 and my 200a tig inverter fine, along with a few led work flood lights etc. That's about the only time I have used it for that sort of thing though.

It's pretty quite compared to a China no-name of the same sort of output but still pretty noisy up close.
The remote start/stop was over £100 though.
Top of the exhaust is curved so might need a bit of effort to seal properly for external ducting.
Also, uses about 1litre diesel per hour and the manual says the oil needs changing every 100hrs.
I have never used the 110v output but it's a change over type switch so you can't use both at the same time.
I presume the 3ph version is the same, I.e you would need to walk out to the machine to swap from single to 3phase.

Mine is also the long run 8000. The exhaust is extended using some flexipipe, fitted to the outlet with paste and exhaust clamp, its only 2 meters, works fine.
No remote start option, though we do have a break before make switch in the house incase its required.

Just fit a private meter and pay your parents your usage. A diesel genset cannot match the cost of mains elektrikery. I have an old Lister CS 4.5 KW SOM generator I run my sheds off from time to time. These old sets are renowned for low fuel consumption still however expensive over mains. If I am using welders I always use the mains as the load pickup delay of the generator is a right PITA. My Inverters, the TIG and my plasma cutter I always run off mains. I will not risk them off my non AVR generator, even tho she is really stable.
