Not 100% this is the right subforum, but it seems the most fitting, feel free to correct me.
I recently acquired a Migatronic KME 550 in "lightly abused" condition (from an auction at a shipyard, who themselves bought it at an auction from a hire company).
After testing it briefly at a mates unit, haven't been able to run it in the workshop because my Rotary Phase Converter doesn't play nicely with welders as it turns out.
I'm looking at getting a generator to run it but have questions before I go to the auctions again in a couple of weeks with a view to hunting down something suitable.
- Given I'm using this at home and am realistically never going to want to run at the full 550A & 60V, can I "get away with" a smaller generator (say 22 or 11kVA, rather than a 34 or 40)?
- Are there specific pitfalls to watch out for in terms of generator comparability for running these kinds of machines (it's a mid 90's thyristor controlled type, not a modern inverter welder)?
- Should I expect power quality issues if I was to go with an older genset using brushed excitation over a modern brushless unit?
- Do I need to go round on the day poring over the machines and looking up the specs of their AVR units to determine suitability, and if so what am I looking for?
I have discussed getting a 3 phase connection with my DNO, but compared to a decent second-hand generator the cost wouldn't make sense unfortunately.
