Geared vs belt driven drills

I'm looking for an upgrade from my Axminster belt driven bench drill. It's alright but I want something much more powerful that for example will drill 30mm holes. A local blacksmith/engineer (who is an undoubted genius when you see his work) I visited made it sound like a geared drill was the only way to go. How does that tally with general opinion?

I have a gear driven pillar drill and to change between speeds takes less than a second (so long as its stopped).
It has the added benefit of a 3 speed downfeed as well.

Someone I know might have one of them for sale. I know nothing about engineering - are they simple to fix if something goes pop? They look like something out of a Terry Gilliam film, are they simple to use or are they for niche jobs?

They are simple to use but require setting up . Down side is they are very heavy to move and disassemble and are very tall. They take up a lot of room.They run two belts. One for the motor and one for the power feed to quill. As with all old drills the main problem is ware in the quill. But this one is good. To be honest I wouldn't recommend one if you need a drill just to drill small holes .

That is a fine bit of kit, but.. if you just wont to drill holes. Might be a bit niche..
