No, 80w90 gear oil at 40c is about 120-140cst, that does sounds like it's just running generic hydraulic oil - or it should be and some numpty has put treacle or thickener in it.

The N46 is about the same as a 70w80 or 75w-80 gear oil.

You are right, I noticed that on the graph at Kew linked above and pic below . I'll stick some 85w/90 in it that I have and keep an eye.
