Took my gates to be Galvanised yesterday and recieved a call today to tell me the steel stock pipe i used to cut into rings had a coating of Lauqer <<<(spell) on them and theres a 90% chance there going to end up being black as the acid bath wont remove it for the galvo to stick. There too tight to get in there with anything to remove or grind off now so looks like ile have to paint once galvanised...Anyone else ever made this cok-up?

If I were in the situation you are in, I would be tempted to take the gates back before theyre dipped in the zinc and have a shotblaster go over the rings.

The rings wont just go black, they will also have remnants of snotty zinc hanging off them, which will be even more of a pain to remove.


As for it being a cock up- Nah, every day is a school day and you've learned something new

What's the cost of writing them off and not having them galvanised?

What's the cost of picking them up and having them blasted, and then galvanised?

What's the cost of picking them up and then painting them, with or without blasting?

I've got an idea that a hit and miss galv job would be then worst of all worlds.

The other month I made four 30' wagon subframes that the customer wanted galving, because of the size we couldn't use our usual galver. As normal I drilled 12mm holes in all the sealed box and in the closed ends. When they got there the galver reckoned they needed another 30 holes at a quid a hole my boss wasn't happy and told them to feck off, he didn't appreciate it either when I suggested I deserved a pay rise if the going rate was a quid a hole

I have to sand lacquer off tube as well before they go, also watch out for paint pen marks because galv doesn't like that either.

Oh some places love to drill holes not required and I am not surprised at £1 a pop. Had some issues with the third partly were my galv is collected from, the galv driver and a few so called experienced skilled men the other week all saying I needed holes! phoned the Galv boss and he agreed with me non required! Not being big headed its just they don't teach right on such matters now, few are able to think such things through and just jump to incorrect assumptions based on ignorance .

Wedge was it? those boys have drilled holes next to holes before now

Rather than galving them - why not have them powder coated instead?

I shouldn't as sooner or later it peels off in lumps and corrodes underneath. Oh and I hate powder coat gates they look cheap, mass produced and plastic moulded

plus the lacquer still needs to come off first.

Fair enough. I'm planning on doing a metal frame that can be dipped/coated, then putting wooden boards into that.

Wife wanted them black so looks like she got her own way then when i get them back...Thanks for the help lads but a bit of flaking galvo on a pair of gates ranks about 0000.1% importance in the grand sceme of things in my life atm, time is a very valuable commodity as i have customers screaming for new roofs and a family to bed and board
