Hi all,im making a single and double gate for my drive and will be using posts as my walls are old and dont trust them.I will be using 50x50x2.5mm posts 8ft tall with 2ft of that concreted into the ground,and my framework is 25x25x2mm.Now the problem i have is im not sure as to the best hinges or eyes or bolts to use or where to get them from.I have looked at forest metals and ais and there isnt much of a selection so ithought i would ask some of you gatemakers.there is a910mm opening wall to wall for the single and 2280mm opening wall to wall for the double.Any help would be hugely appreciated,ive been welding 15 years but this is afirst attempt at gates and dont want to ****** them up!!I will be fine making the gates just the bloody fittings is annoying!thx

50 x 50 shs is a bit weedy, especially if there is 6' above ground. Either weld some tags to the top of the post about 1/3rd down, or, if your wall is not so good, use a bigger section post - 80 x 80 shs.
Again 25 x 25 shs is a bit flimsy for the frame. I really wouldnt go less than 30mm box section for the frame.
Try dc iron for the components - i get all my stuff from there - they will have everything you need in stock.

These are a handy type of hinge. weld one end to the post, drill a hole in the gate frame and weld the round threaded nut in place. You can then screw it in and out to level the gates.
I get them from http://www.johnhplace.com/ there cheap enough, probably a few quid delivery to the mainland.

Redo your sums, if you have an 8ft post and you bury 2ft you will only have 6ft sticking out the ground.
IMO, if you want a 7ft post out the ground you will realistically need 3ft in concrete as a minimum.

You could use gate hooks and eyes. The weld on ones are prettier though.
I'd agree with that. And for the belt and braces approach tie the top back to the wall too. In my book there's no such thing as 'over-engineering'!

Re gates, if I am unsure about the structural aspects of anything I get asked to make I go and have a look at what else has been done already, I also have a mate who is an engineer who does this kind of stuff, always willing to offer help and info, try a local agricultural engineer they seem to be experienced in just about everything.

right then,my builder mate owes me a favour after i aquired a cement mixer for him(not pinched gaffer gave it me needed new cord).i have asked him to build me 3 new pillars of breezeblock and then rendered.So problem solved get him to make pillars then build gates and pin to new walls after cementing posts.prob go with the expert gate makers and use bigger posts.thx 4 advice welderpaul and co

concrete a 100x100 box section into the foundation when you pour them for your pillar, with two 40x40 box sections welded to the posts at right angles. Leave the 40x40 long enough to protrude through the block pillers after your brickie has finished. Then weld your hinges to them once the block pillars have set.
It might be overkill but it works for me.
