I was just going to ask if it had been tensioned in the correct direction, as VAG modified tensioners so the direction changed, however not all aftermarket suppliers changed their tensioners, and not all instructions reflected the changes. You had to go by the arrows on the tensioner, not what the instructions told you.

Had dealings with their bearing guys on the tech side. V.knowledgeable. I learnt a lot. The guy said lots of fakes about right down to packaging and even bar codes. It's a huge issue.

Sad but true....
Not necessarily Gates fault - many different grades of hose, their hoses meet the required spec - but use an old spec with new fuels and it will fail.

VW sent out a TSB a few years ago about fake VW-branded brake pads on the market. The packaging all looked legit, but the friction material was seperating from the backing plates.

Dayco is OEM for a lot of PSA/Ford/JLR belted engines, never had any issues with their kits, always bought from a factors (sometimes online) rather than fleabay though.

Did bottom pulley bolt come undone?
There is special tool that fits into the shape of the bottom pulley to fit and torq up the bottom pulley bolt (murder tight) 160nm + 180degrees on new bolt.
I made the tool up - I got one somewhere - gas cut shaped thing - wanna borrow it? - I would have to find it first as not used it for ages!

Gates kits are OE spec - should be OK - I tend to prefer INA kits - as they tend to come with a full set of new bolts for everything (over kill)

The gates kit that failed came from a motor factors place but the good news is the LT had a genuine VW one fitted today and seems to have no issues, it started fine no odd noises or smoke but at some point it willhave a compression test incase any valves got bent, so now we needto sort the gates kit on my VW T4 next as i am not chancing it.

Sounds like you were lucky.
The two of those engines i've had with snapped belts didn't bend valves (as they're perpendicular to the piston) but they broke the cam, tappets and cam caps, writing the head off.
It's not common for a diesel to bend valves, but they can "swell" the stem from piston collision and bind in the guide.

To be honest when it failed we were in traffic clutch down so maybe the lack of load on the engine helped

All you'd have to keep the crank turning when the belt went is the flywheel, so very little force on it.
If it hasn't been done already it'd be worth pulling the cam cover just for a quick inspection under there.

It was off to fit the timing tool on the cam but nothing was obviously damaged, then again we were not looking that hard so yes maybe worth having a good look before we do anymore

Of course it was.. me having a stupid moment there.
Maybe just a quick check of the tappets and cam cap nuts?
If it's running without issue there can't be anything too wrong with it.
